On FRIEDA, each program has varying numbers of residents in each class, some without any in a certain year. How do you know how many positions a program will have available? I was under the impression that a program is accredited for a certain total number of residents. So if a program has only 1 current PGY-2 but 3 PGY-5's in its graduating class, will they have 3 for the next year? How do you know if they will have any postions available? It would be a waste of time doing an away elective at a place where they will not be accepting residents for the year for which you will be applying. I could email the PD's but with the number of programs to which you apply, that would be a lot of emailing. Any advice on this would be gretly appreciated.

The easiest answer is to talk to the program directly, but that usually is not necessary. Most of the time you can look at how many total residents alloted and subtract the number graduating. This should be the number of incoming spots the next cycle. Very often, programs with strange numbers in a class stick with the same cycle. For example, Wake Forest will take 2,2,2,0 for their total of six. They are not required to do this, but they seem to stick with it. I think UNC, who has four, stays with a 2,1,1,0 rotation. Just be careful as programs may add new spots or people may leave the program and new residents added outside match, etc. People on this site could easily answer your question for specific programs if you list them.
