I am currently a GMO with the USMC and applying for Rads this year. Just a question, I noticed I was BZ for O-4 promotion this year. I am curious, is there anything I need to do prior to my being IZ next year. I updated my ODC at Bupers with my schools and such, but I heard about having to send a picture. What type of picture and where do I send it. Also, I am prior service and only have 3 Navy fitreps so far, will that hurt me?

Also, when does the list for GMO billets come out and where do I find it?

Thanks fellow Sailors!

There is a 100% select rate for physicians from O3->O4. One of my colleages did nothing (didn't even know he was in zone) and still got promoted.

The picture, while not required as part of the selection board process, is something you need to have done. Go to a base photographer and tell him you need a full length officer photograph for your official record. You wear khakis and there is a particular manner in which the photos must be taken. There is an official officer photograph submission form (officer photo form ) that has specific instructions on it.

With regards to fitreps, just make sure they have all the ones you've ever received. Additionally, if you have any recent awards, submit them too. You can submit extra stuff (not extraneous stuff, mind you) directly to the board. See the BUPERS website for guidance. If you do submit correspondence to the board, I'd make sure you mention the fact that you only have X number of fitreps because of whatever reason. It should not hurt you in terms of chances for promotion at this point since the promotion rate is so high to begin with for O-4. At about 6 months prior to the board convening, order your official record so that you can review it completely. If any documentation is missing, send it in a letter to the board. All that stuff gets looked at in painstaking detail before the board meets. How do I know? I have experience recently at a medical corps selection board.

With regards to the GMO billet list, it really doesn't exist anymore since the "new and improved" BUPERS website hit the streets. You have to get in touch with the GMO detailer. BTW, I miss the "olde and unimproved" website.

Hope this helps. Good luck applying to rads, hopefully I'll see you there since I'm applying too.

Make sure your fitreps have consecutive dates. If there are any gaps between duty stations, you may have a problem....otherwise, if you have a pulse and are not a convicted felon...you'll be selected for promotion to the grade when the majority of people get out.

I don't know about the other services, but the USAF is 100% promotion to Maj and about 90-95% for LtCol for the medical corps (i.e., physicians). Promotion to Col. drops to about 50-55%.

Thanks for the info! I guess I don't have too much to worry about, but I will send a photo in just to be sure.

HeloDoc, I applied for Rads, but being an average applicant, I don't expect to be chosen. But you won't know unless you apply. I would like to get a publication in, but I am running out of time. Maybe for the next years board if I need too.

If I don't get selected and I take GMO orders to a new base, can I apply again next year or do I have to wait 2 years? Just curious.

Thanks.

I believe that if you take PCS orders you are usually obligated to serve two or three years depending on the billet. I know this is the case for Flight Surgeons and I think it's the same for GMO's as well. You can choose to extend at your current billet however and incur no additional time.

All you really need is permission from your new CO to apply again. Usually people take a second tour that won't make this difficult (some cushy clinic somewhere).

That's been recently changed. Promotion to LtCol is now 100% noncompete.

I would seriously talk to your detailer about this before making a commitment. CO approval or not, if the Navy shells out money to move you, you're probably going to have to stay. Line CO's have very little visability/knowledge on our requirements. A friend recently extended his obligation by one year by PCS'ing elsewhere. He had one year remaining, took new orders, and now owes two. The detailer will know the answer for sure.

and the detailer will have no problem lying to you about it....
If you PCS you are committed to that duty station for 2 years unless there is a bupers reason to move you. I did a pcs move, then was eligible again because my command decommissioned after 13 months. Had that not happened I would have been stuck in my location for 2 years. I did get stuck there anyway because I matched for a FTOS position. They could not move me for an 11 month assignment, then move me again to my current training location.

If you take a billet in the same geographic location, you can apply and leave in 1 year, with CO's permission, of course.

For the board, as above. Make sure prior fitreps before becoming MC are in your record. No gaps. If you have gaps, you can track down your old CO and have them do some type of administrative addendum.
