How many of you guys have moved to Propofol for Inducing C section patients? In my practice we made the change about 6-7 years ago with no problems. Mommy and Baby are still doing fine with Propofol.

Have not used STB in more than 10 years.

What in your opinion is the advantage of propofol over pentothal?

but seriously, i guess both are fine - propofol definitely crosses and i think fetal blood levels are within 70% of mothers, i dont think pentothal crosses as quickly, probably all depends on how quick they get the baby out.

edit: we have both and use propofol almost exclusively, i cant think of a fetal complication that weve had related to it

If you want to talk F/M values there really isn't much of a difference. For thiopental it is 0.4-1.1, according to Chestnut and 0.65-0.85 for propofol.

During residency I used Propofol exclusively for C/S because it was just a pain in the neck to get the Thiopental out of Pyxis quick enough. Never heard a complaint from NICU, and we worked closely with them. I've used both at my current institution for C/S, and haven't been able to detect a difference.

I'm probably biased but in my experience propofol blunts the response to laryngoscopy in a severe preeclamptic better than thiopental.
