Pros and Cons for Being Part of the Inaugural Class

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for your responses, Mr Kenobi and DrMeows. They were very informative.

I'm a nontraditional applicant myself who has been looking at MU-COM specifically. I'm certainly not trying to toot my own horn, but I have been in healthcare long enough to realize that there are more important things than trying to outdo everyone else. At the end of the day, we're all trying to learn. It's unfortunate that some feel the need to gun when, in reality, the people you truly compete against after everything is said and done you may never meet. Personally, I think being that competitive also gets away from what medicine should be. We all have strengths to offer. Unfortunately for them, gunners miss the point.

In response to your side note, I already don't use social media as much as most people I know, and I would be caught dead before using a hash tag.

Awesome! MU-COM really is a good school…and has potential to become pretty great. I also wanted to add that the vibe will surely be different from class to class. With the right attitude which you seem to have, you won't be disappointed if you end up here. We [the inaugural class] are trying to make sure of that 😉

Glad to see you're still around Old Ben! Hopefully school hasn't taken too much of your vitality. Got to stay strong in the force!

I guess I lucked out with my class, I can honestly say there are very few, if any, gunners. We are the 3rd class, so many of the "disadvantages" don't apply, but even still we are in flux with changing the way lectures are delivered between the two campuses and changing how tests are done and even how they require us to do SOAP notes. Tech issues always seem to be happenin too.
I guess my point is, even a "non-inaugural" class can have its hiccups. As long as rotations are good (and even THAT can be a crapshoot as your rotations wouldn't start for a couple of years and a lot can change in that time) then it pretty much don't matter where you go.
That being said, I like my school. 😉

The DUUUUDE! Sup man. Hangin in there so far! Hope the madness is treating you ok as well bud.

I may be blowing this whole gunner thing out of proportion…My undergrad didn't seem to have too many of the gunner type personalities or at least they were very few and far between, so I may just be more sensitive to it coming out of the gates. Although I'm pretty positive a dude in my class started a response to a professor's question the other day with "physicians are an elite people..."…over the microphone no less. I literally did this:

Whoa, that's pretty gunner-tastic. Maybe you really DO have gunner central at your school??
