Pros and cons of having all vet letters for LORs?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
👍 Plus I think a lot of schools like to see diversity among your LORs.

And being able to succeed academically is important, so I would think schools like to see some evidence of academic potential beyond GPA/GRE numbers. In most cases, a professor can speak to that a lot better than a vet you've worked with.

👍

You should try to have one academic letter. It gives the adcoms a more complete/overall view of you as an applicant. A prof can speak to your time management, ability to handle stressful and rigorous courses, etc. Yes you have your GPA and what not, but that doesn't say anything about you as a person.

And yea, some schools require it. Mine did.

Some schools require an academic letter

This. If you're doing all vets, don't apply to tufts. They want two academic letters. I feel like most schools want at least one academic letter. Make sure you check before you send your stuff to schools 🙂 I'm jealous! I only feel comfortable having one vet write me a letter.

I wholeheartedly agree with all points made above about the pros of having both professors and vets write your evaluations. I just wanted to add that all of my letters of rec were actually written by vets, so it's not the end of the world if you never bothered to get to know any of your professors (like me!). I really would have felt more comfortable with my application if I had had both, though.

I had 2 vets and a non-academic advisor write my letters and I was totally comfortable with it. My advisor had access to grades and had to check them every semester I was involved in the organization so I felt he could still speak on my academic capabilities. I'm not sure I would have felt comfortable with only letters from vets though for the reasons people have mentioned above.

I'm going to end up with 3 vets and one advisor/professor. Even if I only had the recs from the vets I wouldn't be worried though. I've worked with them in such different capacities that I think the'll all be really different.

That information is readily available on the vmcas website. Check out all the links! There is some good reading 🙂
