Pros and cons of kent state

Hey guys, I just wanted to get on here and ask what current students find to be the pros and cons of kent state? I feel like I've done about as much research that a guy can do on the internet. I know that residency placement and board pass rates are a little lower than other programs but what about some of the other stuff that you current students have experienced so far? Thanks in advance!

I think first of all, Kent State is definitely moving in the right direction. The new dean Dr. Boike has been making changes to the curriculum, ie allowing students to get 1 extra externship month by sacrificing a lower patient volume school rotation month. The academic support is great; they give you all the support/tutoring you need. As a 4th year student, I look back and realize I've very much enjoyed my time. There are lots of great opportunities here, and key courses like surgery and trauma are constantly being updated with new literature. If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

I don't particularly know much about Kent expect the bad things I have heard. Can you please tell me more about these changes, and also extra externship month.

What kind of tutoring is provided there?

What are the "great opportunities that you talk about?


I am just asking because I would like to know, this could potentially be my school and I would like it if you could give me your perspective on things!

Sure! I'm not sure what you've heard, but I've noticed a couple of things. No school is perfect; students will always try and advocate ideas to "improve" the experience. Your success as a student correlates very little with which school you attend; rather, it's a reflection on your work ethic and sensibility. I believe this was voiced by AnkleBreaker before, but the number of externships plays a big role in where you end up matching. Kent students start externships in March (which I believe is second only to Scholl). We do have mandatory school rotations like spending 2 months at hospitals doing trauma/burn/vascular or school clinics. Dr. Boike is allowing the Independence (campus) clinic rotation to be substituted out with an additional externship month in order to try and make us more competitive. Academic support includes pretty much all 1st year classes with the heavy concentration in Gross and Lower Anatomy. You will have free access to a table tutor (an upperclassmen attached to your dissection table), tutoring sessions lead by upperclassmen, faculty and TAs covering dissection hours, and private tutoring (if you need it). Opportunities to do research, hold meaningful leadership roles in the school, or to attend seminars are all available. I know of at least 2 weekly didactic sessions available (Healthspan - Dr. Mark Hardy's program, and St. Vincent Charity - Dr. Michael Canales) that students are welcome to attend.
