Hey everyone, my program is trying to restructure our didactics curriculum, and I wanted to see how other programs are doing it.

These questions are for current residents and faculty.

1. How much protected time do residents get (or programs give) for resident didactics on a weekly basis?
2. What does the didactics schedule look like? (Early in the morning before OR starts? Late afternoon after ORs end? Middle of the day with a relief? Weekend? Recorded lectures for watching on their own time?)
3. If residents get relieved, who relieves them for didactics? CRNAs? Fellow residents that are not participating in the didactics? Attendings?
4. How consistent is the relief?

Thanks everyone in advance.

1. lecture and grand rounds protected. 2-3 hours per week
2. lunch lecture (1-1.5 hours)
3. Relieved by CRNA, call residents, junior resident for senior lecture, senior resident for junior lecture, or attending if 1-to-1.
4. Never missed a lecture, but occasionally 5-10 minutes late.

1 hr lecture per week. 3pm. Get relieved by crna or call resident. No relief every 3rd monthish can zoom from other site with covid. Grand rounds in the morning once per week

Same as above. 3-5pm lecture. 2 days per week. Relieved by someone around 3 sometimes later.

Sometimes expected to go back to OR after lecture.

Half day off for lectures. Half of the residents had mornings off and half had afternoons off so we often relieved each other in that way. If not, then CRNAs and fellows would help too. Worked out pretty well.

Switched from 1hr in afternoons daily to a Wednesday morning 0700-1300 block. Had trouble getting residents out on the afternoon schedule. The Wednesday block was glorious. Totally protected didactic time unless there was a really cool case you wanted to do as a senior resident in good standing. Takes a lot of department effort to make it happen but in my opinion by far the best way to ensure residents are actually learning something
