The MCAT organic chemistry topic list includes "protection of alcohols" under the list of important reactions. What reactions are they referring to?

When you're conducting a reaction with a compound that has an -OH group that would interfere with the desired outcome (during Grignard reactions, for example), you need to first add a compound called a protecting group that will essentially "deactivate" the hydroxy group. Then after the reaction you can add a deprotecting group to turn it back into an alcohol.

It's usually taught along with hemiketals/ketals and hemiacetyls/acetyls. If those sound familiar, then you probably learned about protecting groups, and just don't remember them now.

I believe they are referring to the protection of alcohol from those that come randomly into your parties

Idk how much detail you need to know about that
