What psych classes have you taken that you would reccomend? I thought it would be cool to see which classes are easy, interesting, fun, etc. Also, what psych classes are you taking this year, if you wish to share?

Are you talking about for UG? If so, it's a good idea to take a little bit of everything. A lot of grad schools require the basics, like developmental, cognitive, abnormal and social, and then you can branch off from there.

If you're talking grad classes, my first year was varied. Lots of foundational courses like psychopathology and intro to psychodynamic theory, systems, and CBT. Favorite classes first year? Probably intro to clinical interviewing and adult psychopathology.😀

Neuroanatomy wet lab and human brain disection. Required for the neuropsych concentration track, but def my favorite class in grad school. Offered at the med school. Took it 3rd year.

I went to undergrad at Kentucky and got to take a class on personality disorders with Tom Widiger. That was pretty cool.

wow! That's exciting. I'm planning on pursuing that track, assumed neuroanatomy was a requirement, NEVER crossed my mind that a wet lab might be a possibility. I should look into that.

Pathology is always fun. There are some interesting illnesses out there.

Personality disorders as an UG? That's cool. We had straight 'Personality', but not 'Personality disorders' during my UG. I think it would have been very helpful to have a class on PD. I recall in my UG abnormal psych class, the section on PD was rather abstract for me. I could only intellectualize the criteria, having never had first hand experience with what a PD actually looked like until I started dating my 3rd year girlfriend and was frighteningly introduced to BPD. While dating her was no doubt a learning experience, I would have much preferred the class on personality disorders! 🙂

Psychometrics is very informative, especially if you are interested in developing and validating measures.

I am taking human performance, cognition and learning and a seminar in culture and diversity this semester.

This is my first year of UG, so I'm taking social psych, intro to clinical psych, biological psych, and careers in psych.

Wow, did you take AP Psych so they're letting you skip Intro or something?

i was thinking the same thing. Intro to clinical psych, before intro to psych, peronality theory, and all the other basics. seems backwards🙄

Yeah, and I never would have gotten into upper level psych classes my freshman year even if I could, they always filled up. I didn't even get into intro my first semester!

Me neither! I took AP in high school, too, so I went a whole year without taking a psych class. I almost changed my major out of frustration with the system.

Definitely take psych 101 first. After that you can gauge which areas of psych interest you and go from there. Definitely try to take a little of everything, though, because many grad school require Cog, Abnormal, Perception, etc.

Yeah, I took Intro during winter interim because that was the only one I could get into, and then spring semester I had entirely gen eds, with no psych classes. Fortunately I was able to attend Psych Club meetings, which reminded me of what my major actually was. 😀

And then the psych classes I got into sophomore year I had to really work at getting, as in emailing people, asking for add cards, etc.

I hated intro to psych - we never got in depth enough about any of the subjects I was interested in, just grazed the surface of everything. I took it my first semester, so at least I got it out of the way.

Some of my favorite UG psych classes were Biological Basis of Behavior, Adult Psychopathology, and Human Biology (technically a bio class, but I'm a bio minor so it's interesting to me lol). I'm taking a class on evolution in the fall, and a bio lecture series in the spring (my last semester, woot!) that I'm excited about.

Funny, I loved Intro Psych! Some parts were more interesting than others, though.

My favorite upper-levels were Biopsych, Abnormal Psych, Psychopharmacology, Intro to Counseling, and Theories of Personality. I also loved Neurobiology, which was a bio course.

Actually, there was only one upper level course I actively disliked, and I think it had to do more with the course's setup and layout than the material itself.
