What is a working day for a psychiatrist like?

Do the work very long hours from 7 to 7 like lawyers do or do they work dentist hours (no offence to them)?

So is psychiatry a difficult field to get into?

Not really, I believe it is considered primary care --- which are known for being some of the easiest to get into. It's also one of the only fields that the government will pay you to attend medical school if you go into a psych. residency and work in an underserved area.

Im just curious to what there hours are?

Since most offices are open from 9-5, am I assuming that after residency those are the hours they work?

I believe most psychiatrist work about 40 hours a week.

My aunt is about to finally begin to practice as a Psychiatrist since graduating a couple months back, and I remember her telling me that one of the reasons she chose Psychiatry was because of the 9-5 work day.

Yes, there's that. And I believe they give each other discounts on therapy sessions.

I would need that if I was a psychiatrist.

my mom is a psychiatrist. when i was younger she was in private practice and worked 9-5ish (though she did often get phone calls in the middle of the night). now she works in a methadone clinic and a psychiatric hospital, and the hours are much less regular. nights on call, longer days, less money. i guess it depends what kind of work you plan on doing with your degree. she loves it though.

Where can I find more information on this? I'm truly interested in psychiatry.

I think your hours will vary depending on several factors, like any other specialty. I love psychiatry!! I think it is a good field to look into because one of the physicians I shadowed was a child psychiatrist. She worked around 40 hours a week I believe and it was very different that what I expected (in a good way). This physician worked in a treatment center for children for the hospital and she would sit down and speak with each child individually and then meet with her team to discuss the treatment for the childrens. Between psychiatry and an ER physician...I'm stuck at which I want to do.
