I am interested in pursuing a Pain Management fellowship.

I am deciding between Psychiatry and PM&R to get me there, since I have an interest in both specialties.

What are the pros and cons of Psychiatry and PM&R when contrasted against each other?

Along with your assesment, please consider the following:

- level of difficulty to get a residency position in both fields
- salaries and hours after residency
- job market and demand of both fields,
- skills learned in both fields that will be useful towards a
pain management fellowship program.

Thanks for any input.

Do PM&R. You get more procedural experience as well as experience dealing with issues such as chronic back pain, etc... Psych just doesn't take care of as many medical issues as that is not their area of specialization. I wasn't aware that psych was able to do pain management. Both are not too competitive although PM&R may become more competitive in the future as people realize that it is a fairly interesting field with good hours and good pay. A friend of mine recently went to an interview where the residents thought 50 hours a week with q7 call was a rough schedule. Hey after 100 hours and q3-4 that sounds like a vacation to me.
