Psychology prereq?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Depends on the school. Most schools don't require Psych. I think UIC does, but you'll have to check with individual schools about their requirements, and if they accept AP credits. Look at the individual school websites, look in the ADEA book, look at doctoothache's charts, or even just call the schools. If they accept AP Credits but recommend a college course, you don't really need to repeat the class, it's just Psych... that's time better spent on a Bio class or something. And if a school requires a specific class (such as Psych), won't take AP credits, is not one of your top choices, and you don't want to take psych, just don't apply there (I did that with Ohio State, I didn't want to take Anatomy).

Take physiological psych if you want, though it won't count towards your Science GPA.

Hi all, I'm new to this forum, and actually new to the pre-dental world. I was looking through some school's prerequisites and I noticed that at least one has general psychology as a prerequisite. I already passed the Psych AP in high school. One school that I looked at says that they'll accept it, but they recommend that you take the actual college course. Are there schools that don't accept the AP credit at all? If I have to take it again, will they accept something like physiological psychology instead, even though it's not "general" psych? That class has general psych as a prereq and I'll be able to get in with my AP credit. I just don't want to waste time taking something I've already had.
Apparently at my school, you learn how to juggle and make clay models of the nervous system in that class, but does physiological psych in general have that reputation at other schools? I don't want to seem like I'm taking the easy route...
Thanks 🙂

there are definitely schools that dont accept ap credit. -- i thought that it was common for them not to? idk. -- if its a prereq it means its pretty important, so something you took 5+ years ago (by graduation time) probably wont be beneficial and you probably wont remember most of it. ucla is an example of a school that requires psychology, and i doubt you'll find any schools that dont at least suggest you take all required courses at the university level. i couldnt find if they accept ap's actually.

Physiological Psych at my school is basically neuroscience. However, there's more of a focus on various psych disorders like schizophrenia and depression and what neurotransmitters/pathways are involved and psychopharmacology. We definitely didn't play around with clay like 3rd graders.

If you're worried about whether bio-based classes aren't really "psych" then just take another class like social psych or personality psych.

The easiest way to figure out if you AP credit counts is to just call the schools.

you can also think about just taking it again, and get an easy A since youve taken the course already. It will raise your GPA and fulfill the requirement.
