Hello, I am applying to osteopathic schools for 2011 and taking a gap year during 2010-2011. If I do a full time RA psychology position, would that cause the schools the question my commitment to medicine?

No... I took off 4 years and did bench research it never came across as being a negative in any of my interviews... If anything, the research experience will give you a very nice EC to mark down on your app.. But, dont stop doing volunteer work and keep getting clinical experience when you can.

It's rare that a pre-med can do clinical research if that is what you're referring to by "medical research".

I'm sure you will have no problems doing psychology research as a concentration during your glide year but I would definitely look to trying to get some constructive results out of it such as abstracts, presentations, publication (stretch I know in one year but who knows) or at least a letter from your PI or lab supervisor.

It'll also probably show that you are more "well rounded" as well as a conversational topic during a potential interview.

I very much doubt this would be seen in a negative light. I did psychology research as well, and I think having a psychology background will be useful as a physician. It didn't come up in any of my interviews other than them being curious about what kind of research we did. They usually thought it was very interesting!
