Are there any other PT's out there who are currently applying or are in medical school now? I'm a PT, 31 years old and I'm applying now. Ideas from anyone who is or has been in a similar position would be helpful!
Thanks.

I am a P.T. who returned to school to become a D.O. I am a third year at PCSOM right now.

The doctor I shadowed was a PT who went back to school in his late 20's to become a DO. He attended PCOM and is now an Orthopedic Surgeon!

I was an OT for a couple years went abck to school (MD) and am matching into Ortho now. Any questions just give me a PM.

Dude, there are tons of PT's who went to, or are going to med school, especially DO school. 👍

Thanks for all the replies. I'm a dudette, by the way. 🙂 When you all were filling out secondaries, how did you use your degrees/experience to your advantage? I'm trying to tie it in. Also, how did you explain your decision to change from PT to MD/DO? Thanks.

Hey Sam. I'm not a PT but I'm an SLP and I'm applying this year for acceptance in 2008.

I'm 28 and an MPT. I got accepted into LECOM-Erie's D.O. independent study, and will begin next year. I hope to go into orthopedics or other surgical specialty. I got a 23 on my MCAT's (6V, 9B, 8P) and had about a 3.4. I took a Kaplan course to brush up on my sciences, not sure what happened with verbal, but at least I got into a school. I applied to about 7 D.O. programs, but Lake Erie's is the best fit for me with the flexible schedule and lower cost of tuition and living expenses. It was a tough road to get into school, but an easy decision to apply. I really wanted to do more than what I was as a therapist. Good luck, and you can definitely do it if you put in a little time and can be very patient. Happy New Years!!!

MSPT here who decided to go to med school as well, third year student now at a DO school where a background in PT is extremely helpful (and very highly respected). I'm looking to go into PM&R although I flirted with ortho for a while (you'll see/hear a lot about PTs who went to med school and went into PM&R or Ortho - very logical progression).

Personal pt stories should help to make your app personal and impressive as you've already cared for pts, many of your fellow applicants have had no such experience. Just make sure you have strong reasons as to why you want to become a physician and why you're deciding to move on from PT.

best of luck, feel free to PM
