Any idea why this is a prereq in nearly all pharmacy schools? Does anyone know if i go to a UC, can i take this class in a CC since its much cheaper? Also, does it have to be public speaking? What about speech, interpersonal communication, etc

Not sure why they require it, but most pharmacy schools do require you to take public speaking, and other courses will not substitute for that prereq

Some pharmacy schools require you to do projects and give presentations as part of their curriculum. I know the pharmacy school I'm going to have oral presentations in every class :scared:. As far as it being public speaking or interpersonal, it depends on the school you're applying to. I had to take BOTH since some schools required pub speaking and others required interpersonal comm.

Communication is an important part of pharmacy. It's difficult for a lot of people to talk to strangers and a public speaking class is a decent introduction to that. It's a scary requirement and presentations in pharmacy school are daunting, so practice makes perfect. There are also numerous speaking requirements during rotations. If you're frightened about speaking in public now - you'll get over it soon because you have to do it so often. (And this is coming from a guy who panicked everytime he had to give a speech in public speaking class).

Definitely make sure the "speech class" you take meets the requirements of the school.

I took "intro to oral communication" at a New Orleans C.C., but applied to U.F. Well it wasn't on the list of approved speech classes, so I had to send the course description from the handbook of the New Orleans C.C. to the U.F. office to review the class to make sure it was equivalent.

Wellllll while I was waiting to hear back from them I had my transcript from the New Orleans C.C. sent to the FL C.C. where I'm getting my A.A from. Sooo the FL C.C. reviewed it and assigned the "equivalent course code" from THEIR curriculum, which happened to be ON the approved list for U.F.

Then about a week later I get an email from U.F. saying that my New Orleans speech course was reviewed and is NOT equivalent to their requirement.......... BUT since it transferred over to the FL C.C. AS an approved course, I'm still good.

LOL go figure that one out...............

The same thing happened to me. I sent all my transcripts to UF over a year ago just to confirm what I still needed to take. Nothing was ever mentioned about needing another public speaking course, I had taken some sort of interpersonal communication course 5 or so years ago. Low and behold I find out on my conditional acceptance sent in May stated I still need to take a Public Speaking course because they didn't accept what I had taken years ago. So right now I am taking public speaking, haha.

I hated public speaking.

I hate public speaking(except when I'm playing paintball and giving out orders). I don't see what is so bad with just pre-recording a presentation at home while you've had a lot more time to prepare and make it look good.

Then just put it on the laptop and connect it to a projector.

A large part of pharmacy is giving presentations. It may be a one on one presentation in the form of counseling a patient or it could be to a medical team when you are doing rounds. It could even be giving a presentation to a large group at a convention. You will be a professional and professionals need to have presentation skills because that is just a part of being professional. You also have to be able to do presentations on the spot, which through experience will become easier as you do it more. Think back to a presentation you had from someone that was not well prepared. Did it come off as being very good and did the message come to you easily or did you have to search for it? Now think to a presentation by someone very good at public speaking/presenting. Was it easier to follow what they were saying and pick up on their message? I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want to be the doofus that stumbles through any presentation, making me look lazy and unprofessional.

I go to UCI, and I had to take speech at a JC as our school doesn't offer it

You can take any class for anything (pre-reqs) at a JC as long as it falls under the "Equivalencies" page for the pharm school you are applying for. For example, I am taking Microbio, speech, and physio at a JC while the rest of my pre-reqs were completed at UCI

Personally I think it's interesting that many pharmacy schools have some sort of speech requirement, whereas most medical schools (that I have looked at) don't...

Both professions require public speaking skills, for the most part. Anyone know the reason for this?

I don't know why this is, but how many people have you heard of that have said a doctor was not very personable and talked at them instead of to them? Now think about how many times you've heard someone say the same thing about a pharmacist.

most schools won't let you substitute speech classes, even with other speech classes. So make sure the class you enroll in, is the required class, if you aren't sure, call the school you are applying to.

You can take it at a CC. It actually might be less nerve wrecking at a CC. Most pharmacy schools don't care where you go as long as the college is accredited.

They require it for several reasons, the big one being....
You need to be able to speak confidently and clearly. You will be counseling patients! Being a good communicator is SO important as a pharmacist. It really is! Also in pharmacy school you have to do lots of presentations and speak infront of the class. If you have a big issue with public speaking you might want to find another career (i'm not trying to be mean just being honest!)

I hate public speaking (except when I'm swearing up a storm because my team didn't cover me and I get shot to death by the entire opposing team). That's woodsball for ya.
