Hey guys,

I am applying to medical school this June and I have finished writing one 1st author publication and a second co author publication. We are in the process of submitting them both for revision by mid to late February.

I’m sure you know that the process of getting it published completely after revisions and all can take a couple of months. So say by June, if both of them will still be under the reviewers or if we have to resubmit them how can I write this on my amcas?

Will it still look good that I wrote a 1st author and another coauthor publication? I know I can update with an update letter but but how will my current situation look? @Catalystik @gonnif

Thanks

If you submit AMCAS in June, you'll have to list the pubs as "in submission" or "under review" and update schools once they're accepted.

They are not "publications" until they are accepted and appear in print. Take care not to refer to them in that way on your application.

You could mention the submitted manuscripts briefly in the same space with with the affiliated Research projects (or in a Posters/Presentations space if the same data was previously shared in that manner), but it would be better to restrain yourself until review is complete and you receive a letter of acceptance from a journal. You may need to resubmit multiple times or commit to major revisions before the process is completed in your favor. No value accrues to your application until that time comes, unless you already have a track record of successful submissions.

Wait @Catalystik @gonnif

If a student writes a paper, especially a 1st author meaning he was significantly involved in writing it, and submits it at a journal for review and is in progress doesn't this impress you all? Of course if it is actually published then its great, but I feel that writing it and submitting it is a huge step forward. For example, even if it is under review, I would view it much higher than a poster, or a talk or people with just research experience.

You could submit a relative's meat loaf recipe and claim it's "under review." If it's more substantive prose than that, how would a med school application reviewer know, until the paper has gone through the entire vetting process and been accepted for publication?

But, from reading the individual's research description won't this show that the publication they wrote is actually scientific and a lot of time probably went into it? I totally understand your view but I just am surprised that this won't count for anything. It's not even a little impressive.
