I did a literature review for the research lab I work in a found some very smart authors saying very smart things...(these are verbatim)

The first quote is pretty bad, but I dont see anything wrong with the second quote. Yea it seems like common sense to you but the authors can't assume that everyone knows that. All they did was explain the cause of a chronic disease.... you'll get that if you look at any research aticle, whether it be on diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc. You'll probaly find a sentence that looks like "excessive accumulation of fatty plaques in the coronary arteries cause coronary artery disease, which can lead to a heart attack." Yea no ****, but its necessary to say when describing something like that.

also realize that there are politics that go into publications. some people who get credited as an author on a publication don't write a single word or have anything to do with the actual study.

If it weren't for hte last sentence, this thread could of gone somewhere. Imagine... a thread in which people dig out the funniest things they can find in papers/textbooks.. If you want to start something productive, don't issue a largescale insult at the end of it.

i realized afterwards that comment made me seem like an a hole...i should have put a disclaimer at the end that i was just giving you a hard time. i figured since you are workin in a research lab you probably have somethin cookin if not already been published. my apologies for coming off the wrong way.

Well, if this is the paper's thesis/purpose of the experiment, then yes, it's obviously not rocket science.

But if the paper is trying to make a nuanced background statement in the Introduction section about the accumulation of adipose tissue vs. other physiological markers of obesity (and there are many factors apart from adipose tissue that characterize obesity), then perhaps it's not quite so stupid. It sort of *does* depend on the context.

There are people who would argue for characterizing obesity as a disorder of the immune system with obvious environmental influences (sort of a complicated argument).

What is so bad about these sentences? I work with journal articles every day for my research associate job. Did you know that neurodegeneration causes neurological conditions? You would think only an idiot stats such a thing, but guess what, this type of sentence is MANDATORY for introduction information. You may not know this, but journal articles are a form of communication. You should not assume the person reading the article will know the background information before reading it.
