Hey everyone, I need some advice on if I should take the USMLE scheduled or push it back. I'm an Osteopathic student from TUCOM-CA. I'm set for USMLE June 16 and COMLEX on June 20. I start my family practice rotations on June 23. I would like to go into some sort of surgery, but I'm not sure what kind yet.

  • I've taken the Kaplan COMLEX course (practice COMLEX score of 58).

  • Been doing Kaplan questions, ~50-58% average (highest 68%).

  • Took test 1 of NBME timed (had lost 15 mins time by mistake) - 186 (yikes!!):scared: (Lowest was Behavioral and Nutrition? Everything else was around the low passing range. 🙁

  • I haven't gone over Biochem, Behavioral, Embyro, or Anatomy yet, but haven't been bombing the questions. (I was a Biochem major back in the day)
Today I'm finishing neuro HYR. If I was to take the test as planned I was going to spend the next 4-5 days going over Biochem (Lippincotts). Then a day of anatomy and embryo. And a day for Micro, pharm, and path quick review.

So should I push both back a few weeks? Any advice on how else to study?

Thanks

You could wait until 5 days before your usmle and take another NBME practice test to see where you are, and reschedule without fee if you are not scoring where you need to be scoring.

I am also a DO student and I did this, and decided to push back my USMLE until August (but my clinicals don't start until the end of August) as I only got a 210 on my practice NBME last week and my goal is 230...I think it would be hard to study a lot once your clinicals start, but the way I was looking at it, if you can't do AT LEAST average, better to be ABOVE on the USMLE, as a DO student, there is no point in taking it just to barely or not pass... just my $0.02 and my plan, but staying in Cali for a surgery rotation I would think would require decent USMLE score...though I know absolutely no specifics. good luck.:luck:

Thanks. Ideally I'd like to get a 220-230. I'll probably try another test after biochem, and take the financial hit and reschedule .if I'm not close

I've heard the same thing about the USMLE scoring for osteopaths. But if I want to try surgery, I've got to suck it up and do it. I guess its a matter of when, and not if. 🙂

I'd appreciate anyone else ideas as well. 🙂

I'm in a similar boat, though I'm an MD student. My test is a week from today, and a week ago I did the free 150 and got a 76% (medfriends estimates 230). I won't take the test if I don't think I will break a 240, which means that I may be putting the test off until after my 3rd year rotations.

My plan right now is to take an NBME this friday, and depending on how that goes, either take it on tuesday or put it off until the next 4 week period of time I have to dedicate to studying.
