Put a future EC on my application?

I got a research for credit position in an Aquapathology lab starting next semester. Ill be doing PCR, cloning, ELISA, western blot. I have no previous research experience. Im applying this summer.

Can I put info on my "future research" on my application? Because technically, by the time I get an interview, I will have that experience.

Future activities aren't good to put on at all. You never know what can change in the future, so there's no guarantee that you actually will have ended up doing it.

If it has happened by the time you receive an interview, then it can be brought up as something fresh and new in your interview.

I understand that you probably wanted to include this future EC to make yourself better so that you can get that interview etc...but..it's really frowned upon to put something that has yet to happen.

Don't put things you haven't done yet on your AMCAS. It will seem like you are padding.

Mention it in your personal statement or supplemental essays. If you let them know you are planning for the future and are excited to contribute to research it is good, but you can't comment retroactively on something that hasn't occurred yet.

I'm often asked what my hobbies are. I don't have any. I know what I'd like to do, but I never go do them.

I had an entire section of my AMCAS where I talked about my plans for next year.

I included things that I was already in the process of working on and were 100% secure. (volunteering at an after school program, A new research project, a new job offer I had for the next semester..etc)

I think its OK to talk about what your plans are for next year. It gives interviewers something to ask about... "So how is your new job..blah blah blah"

Just be SURE that its going to happen before you list it.

i'm also in a similar situation to OP. i secured a one-year full-time job as a clinical research assistant at a nearby university and it's pretty much set in stone for me to begin in june. do i list it or not? the job description is pretty stable though.

I would list yours. AMCAS submission doesn't open till early/mid June anyways.

I think a better place for these would be the LOIs. When you're trying to sell yourself, it would be more appropriate to mention it in some context, rather than list the future activity alone. Another plus: by the time you have to submit the LOI, you'll already be working at the lab and it won't be in the future.

I think you'd be crazy not to list this on your AMCAS, it's part of selling yourself and you just have to spin it. "Getting a research position in aquapathology" is a nice accomplishment and you just have to describe it properly. I don't know how you got the position, but if it was the usual way (talking with professors until one agreed to do a project with you), you can describe how you sought out professors whose research matched your interests, how you read primer literature and met with a professor to come to an agreement on an interesting research project that will produce original results. Describe the professor's willingness to mentor you and what steps you are currently taking to prepare for the project. Describe everything the project entails (weekly group meetings? weekly meetings with your professor to discuss your progress?, etc.) You don't need to fudge anything or predict the future to make it sound impressive. Don't even call it "future research" say you "secured a research position in aquapathology."

I have a clinical research position that is starting around June 1, so I'm just going to wait to submit my AMCAS until after I have worked a day or two, just to be sure it won't fall through at the last second or something. Then I will list my intended stop date in the description.

Even if somehow it ends up delaying my AMCAS a little bit, this is the first clinical research experience I have had, so in my case I think its definitely worth waiting a few extra days to submit.
