a NUMBER is larger than 5 by the same amount that it is smaller than 3 more than 14. What is the NUMBER?
Put it into math as you read it.

A number: x
Is larger than 5 by: (x-5)
The same amount: (x-5) =
That it is smaller than: (x-5) = (? - x) <-- why does x go second? Because it is SMALLER than something.
3 more than 14: (x-5) = ( [3+14] - x)

So you have: (x-5) = (17-x)

Solve and get 2x = 22 so x = 11.

maybe I can make this a little clearer for you.

It's an average. So 3 greater then 14 = 17 + 5 (its the number right between 17 and 5) = 22. Then divide by 2 since your averaging 2 numbers and you get 11.

The number is smaller than 3+14 = 17 and larger than 5. Find the average between them to get your answer. That's 17+5 /2 = 11
