For the first one, set up a ratio sort of thing.

10/2y = 25x/what you're looking for

Your natural instinct is to use x or y for unknowns but those are already used in the original ratio. So just pick another one of the 26 lovely letters of the alphabet.

10/2y = 25x/g

Solve for g and you should get g = 5xy

Take the 19 and divide it by 3.... this gives you 6.x (6-squares complete)
Take the 23 and divide it by 3.... this gives you 7.x (7-squares complete)

6 X 7 = 42 complete squares.

Gotta be careful with the answer! Spontaneously answering the question by finding the area of 19x23 and divide by 3x3 area would not give you the right answer.

Exactly! I did something similar to that where I found the area of both squares and just divided: 19X23= 437 and 3X3= 9. Dividing 437 into 9 I got 48.5 which is def the wrong answer.

for the first one, notice that all they did was DIVIDE by 5 and multiply by Y. Do the same for the second number. Divide by 5 and multiple by Y you get the answer.
