I guess this question is a longshot, but are there any definite resources around the net or otherwise that can offer a *ranking* of path programs with regards to competitiveness, quality of program, fellowships, and overall?

FREIDA offers very general information about programs and can somewhat fulfill the fellowships available and how many positions a program has, but it isnt updated consistently and seems not to help greatly in an overall evaluation of programs.

What are programs judged upon in Pathology?

-residency positions
-size of department
-university affiliation, if so, what is the quality of the university
-reputation
-fellowships
-etc...

what is important in evaluating a path program for its quality? (aside from actually visiting one and evaluating it in person).....

how did you evaluate the programs you were applying to GreatPumpkin? was it all "visit-based" evaluation or was there anything on paper that also influenced your decision?

anyone have any links?

(this is a heartless attempt to attract attention to this ignored post!! hehe)😀

cheers

Us pathologists tend to be non-rankers...at least I'm hoping it stays that way. I hope pathologists-to-be don't turn our precious forum into a US World News Ranking Report. Yuck...

(Welcome aboard on the other hand, just laying down the ground rules that exist only in my mind. 😉 )

Though to really evaluate them in any meaninful way. Some programs are great at certain things but suck in others.

Things to consider:
Traditional things like prestige of the hospital and facuilty seem to be always a consideration.
Having competitive fellowships.
Having a good number of surgicals per resident.
Having a CP program that at least is close to the AP side.(esp. blood bank)
My personal number one factor is find out if the residents are happy. (if they are not, doubtful you would be either)
Research opportunities.
Cost of living, crime in area, etc..
Work hours during surgical path.
Sure there are lots of others..tired tonight

There are no good resources online that I have found to answer these questions. I would hope folks would post what they think about places they went on interviews. Emailing residents in a program is not a bad idea.

thanks alot Great Pumpkin....at least that puts some perspective on the matter.

im just trying to get a feel for what kind of programs ill be looking at when i apply....

one of my *heartless* (hehe) friends was telling me that the funding of various programs by the NIH stated on the NIH website may correlate to what tier the program is in....you think this could be valid? Using the theory that more important and influential programs would recieve more money sounds reasonable....i dont think im competitive enough to match into a top tier residency, but at least i can put the other programs im interested in perspective.

thanks for the help
cheers
