Hey I am interested in applying to both of these schools in the fall. Is there anybody out there who attends either one of these schools who can helo me iron out some things before I apply??

i interviewed at both........kirksville was way too small of a town for a chicago girl like me, but both are AWESOME schools. there are great things about both....the one negative thing i remember though was that kirksville was such a small town you had to go elsewhere 3rd and 4th year for rotations because there wasn't room there for all of the s tudents. however, this could be good if you like travelling (i know they had rotations available in a few states, including colorado, arizona, illinois...etc)

What are some of the questions you have?

My GPA is only in the 3.0 range, but the D.O who is going to be writing my letter is a grad of DMU, I do have experience in research, and good extracurricular activities, I just took the MCAT yesterday, and if I end up getting good results on that, will I have a realistic shot of getting in to either Kirskville or DMU??

At DMU, the slots for residency in Des Moines are also limited, though there are probably more than at kirksville (approx. 45 to be passed out among 200+ students). Other slots include Ohio, Florida, Northeast (Penn., NJ, etc.), Missouri/Kansas, and Michigan (with more trying to be reigned in this year). I really liked Des Moines because of the friendly atmosphere of the school, size of the city that it was located in, getting a computer and wireless internet, and their fantastic OMM department. If you are unsure, come and visit both schools and figure out where you feel more at home.

I had a bit of a hard time deciding between California and DMU but I can tell you that I am very happy that I chose DMU. I would stay away from Kirksville if you are from a town of anything over 20K people. The school may be good but you do need stuff to do in your off time (the little you have 😀 ).

I am here to say, once again, that the size of Kirksville should not be that big of a factor if you are really interested in the school. I went to undergrad in Chicago and lived in Denver before moving to the 'Ville. I have never lived in a city of less than 100,000 people before now. I am a "big city" person all the way, and I can assure you that there is nothing significant lacking here. As a med student I study ALL OF THE TIME, so I have no time to regularly take part in whatever activities the thriving metropolis of Des Moines has to offer. And when I do have time, Columbia is 90 miles away, and Kansas City and St. Louis are 3 hours away. Chicago is 5 hours away, and I have been there several times.

All I am saying is go to whatever school you want, but realize that Kirksville is a fine place to live. I have a 3 bedroon house for 300 bucks a month, and just this past weekend there was a square dancing contest in our town square. What more could you want?

But would I be able to get into DMU with only a 3.0?? The D.O who is writing me a letter went to school at DMU, plus I do have research experience, and good ECs, I just took my MCAT yesterday, and if I score a 27 or above, would I have a realistic shot of getting into DMU??

i personally lked both schools a lot. the reason i decided 2 go elsewhere is that I did not like the surroundign areas of either school....then again i interviewed in november....

other than the areas, the schools are really great...KCOM really cares about students and DMU has great new technology

I'm a 2007er at DMU, and I believe when we started class our stats were something like a 25 on the MCAT but a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Your other experience is an added plus, and if you understand the osteopathic prinicipal that is impressive on your interview day. I would say you do have a realistic shot at either school, but it depends on your interview. DMU looks at more than just grades and MCAT score, but if you are similar to someone else then they turn to that as the deciding factor. I would go ahead and apply though at both, odds are you would get in at one or the other.

I concur with Cremaster but our class (2008) had slightly higher averages (not exactly sure of #'s) but if you have experiance that sets you apart you have a good chance. I would still apply because when it comes down to it you never know what the adcom is looking for at the time.
