A search of my title yielded MANY results, but most were in the DO section and didn't apply. My question is when MD schools "average" the two grades you received, do they average the two grades ie. for a 4 unit class, a C and then an A becomes a B, so that is counted as 3.0 points out of 4.0 units or do they just count the second class as if it was another course entirely (a C and then an A in the same class is counted as 6.0 points out of a possible 8.0 units). I would imagine it is the former, as I could see it being abused by neurotic premeds (not saying I'm not one) that try to make that B+ into an A or something and get the same number of points for a class they've already taken.

MD schools count both grades separately. For example you get a C and retook the same class for an A, they still count the C as just another class including the A.

This. Many (most?) universities don't allow re-takes of classes you pass, or that you pass with some minimum grade, so you can't re-take a B+ to get an A without taking courses at other schools. The return on that type of activity is so small, there really is no point in med schools trying to do something to guard against it.

Also, by counting each time you take a class as the full number of credits, it isn't as easy to bump up your GPA by taking and getting more A's, since you obviously need more 4.0 credits to repair a 6 credit B average than you would need to repair a 3 credit B average.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, guys. I actually didn't know universities would stop you from retaking if you already took the class with some minimum grade. You won't get credit with the school but surely it would show up on your transcript and therefore be factored into the AMCAS calculation.
