If I have a good gpa of 3.0+, but have a D in a math/science course that is not one of the requirements, would it have any significant effect on my chances of getting accepted?🙁

It will hurt your overall GPA but not your Pre Req GPA, so its not as terrible as if it was a pre-req. However, to be competitive a 3.0 isn't going to cut it unless you have a high PCAT score or something else that helps you stand out. On average, you should have around a 3.5 at least.

I was also curious about something similar (I got a B in college algebra and was wondering if it would hurt my math/science pre-req GPA). So if it isn't on the list of pre-reqs, then it isn't entered into your pre-req GPA?

i was thinking the same thing, 3.0 GPA isn't a good GPA... you're going to have to nail the hell out of the PCAT.

p.s. OKgirl, isn't that a high school math class? that shouldn't matter at all!

No, I took it at college. I was unaware that it wasn't required because of my math score on the ACT. I'm just hoping that the class I didn't need won't end up hurting my GPA!

It will affect your cumulative gpa, and not your pre-req. gpa. Also, keep in mind some schools look at Math/Sci GPA also. So it depends really on the school. I would re-take any class that you got a D or F regardless if its a pre-req or not. As to re-take a C or not, you should check how much your gpa would improve if you did retake that C (sometimes the trouble isn't worth it).

To add on above, If you retake any classes you done poorly in, admissions committee will want you to earn grades nothing short of an A. No exception! They assume you already taken this class and should have no excuse in performing exceptionally well second time around. If you are not ready to retake it and get an A or isn't at a position to do well, drop the class and retake it at a more favorable time. good luck!
