Question about interview outfits for ladies

Sorry for sounding fashionably stupid...but would it be ok if I go in those women suits that Hilary Clinton and other female politician wears?

i have acrylic nails, just French tips and not too long....do you think thats ok for an interview or should i take them off and go with my natural nails?

Definitely take the acrylics off. For one, acrylics scream teenager/early twenties. But most importantly, you will probably not be allowed to wear acrylic nails as a dental student. Go with natural, nicely shaped, buffed nails or nude or light pink polish.

If you mean a classic wool, box jacket, Chanel-esque suit, then yes. Though you should wear neutral colors, gray, brown, black, navy.

And Study girl I think you can wear a dress, but not that one. Think shift dress, though sleeveless requires a jacket. You might be able to get away without a jacket if the dress has cap-sleeves.

yea i got them taken off,i figured it would be best that way but still wanted some feedback-since i have no thyroid my natural nails are very brittle and its hard to keep them looking nice, i'll just bring a file and fix them right before any interviews 😀

now another thought; in the winter would it be ok to wear snowboots and then change out of them? idk where i would put them...

I would like to bring up the make-up opinions again. A lot of you are saying to wear very minimal make-up(possibly no foundation, nude colors and no eye liner).... I just have a different opinion on this and I am wondering where you are coming from with this information.

Of course I'm not going to go into my interview with bright blue eyeshadow or elvira eyes.... but I happen to think that the make-up a typical girl would wear out on say, a date, would be perfectly fine.

I wear shimmery gold and bronze eyes shadow, a nice med/thin line of black eyeliner and usually a good amount of mascara. I personally would rather look my absolute best and than be a 'plain jane' in a group of men and women that doesn't standout. I don't wear any more make-up than the female dentists I see in magazine advertisements or the female dentists I have shadowed.....

I went on a "dental day" type of event at a dental school a few months back and was shocked at how shambled the girls looked. Not only was I the only female in a suit, I was the only one in what I would consider "professional attire". Sure it wasn't an interview, but it was still a very formal day. The other girls had nasty frizzy hair that they either left fall tangled in their face or pulled it back in a casual ponytail. And none of them were wearing makeup!!!

I of course received the most attention from the tour guides and admissions directors that attended(who were mostly women). They directed questions to me, made lots of eye contact and even asked me to stay later to go over my application. I'm not saying all of that was because I wore make-up, but I definitely looked like the only one who cared enough not to roll out of bed to attend their event.

Make-up gives you confidence, confidence makes you standout! That's just my two cents about the matter.

👍👍 i totally agree with you. i was going to wear makeup so i feel good and put together, i was brought up never to go out barefaced because then you look like you dont care enough to put work into how you look. my makeup routine is similar to yours and i dont think it looks like too much for an interview

i'm sure there are girls who feel more comfortable without makeup and that's their choice, i think whatever's going to make you feel confident and strong at the interview is the best option

Yep, I agree with both of you. I wear makeup on a daily basis (even during exams) so that's nothing new to me. I mean, it's not clown makeup by any means, but just your everyday-light-look.

My nails are kind of weird shaped so when I file them into a nice "squoval" the whites look a little odd so I have to wear nail polish.

On the winter wear subject, i'm from AZ so I really have no winter clothes, I would appreciate any advice since half the schools I applied to are northeast.

Makeup-wise I usually wear mineral powder, brown eyeliner and mascara. If I have a little more time I use violet gel eyeliner. But I'll probably just do my usual for interviews.

panty hose depends on the length of your sleeves on your jacket

I'm going with all you girls about the make up. If you can do a good job and like wearing it, go for it. I like to mix an assortment of colors and I'm thinking about going for a professional smokey eye look (we'll see how that works...).

Here is my next question, are you ladies that have long hair wearing it up or down???

I have long hair and plan on pulling it out of my face. I don't think it HAS to be all up, but make sure that you aren't constantly needing to fix it or push it out of your face. Half up or all the way up would be the best bet, in my opinion.

Man, i really hate wearing my hair up. I guess I'll just make sure it doesn't fall in my face. Good point!

My hair is about to my elbows and I have bangs so if I'm feeling fancy I'll do a french twist, but I'll probably just put half of it up to keep it off my face. I thought I would cut it off before interviews, but now I'm loving my long hair...

I have semi-long hair(about mid-chest) and I am planning on wearing it half-up with a little/small poof(not like snooki or anything )with either a fancy barrette or a some type of twist with bobby pins.

My friends who have hair slightly longer than mine wore their hair down for their medical school interviews and were all accepted- I don't think that's a bad thing to do if that's how you look best. I'm wearing my hair half-up half down because that looked the nicest with my suit and since I have a lot of layers my hair tends to fall in my face if styled down. I also think a thin headband would be cute and preppy for those wearing their hair down.

👍 ^^ Snooki's poof is ridiculous. I don't know how anyone would ever think that looks good.

Ugh, Snooki is one of the most visually unappealing people I have ever seen.

omg I'm sooo glad I saw this post!! I was about to just wear a blouse, cardigan and slacks but now I guess it's time to go shopping!!! and fast too, my interview's in a few days =PP

As for hair, I have elbow length hair and I'm planning to just leave it down straight with pinned back bangs.

I'm definitely wearing makeup, just going for a clean, put-together look. Like a natural brown smokey eye I guess?? =D

👍 truer words have never been spoken.

and i had elbow length hair and was going to pull it back out of my face with a pearl barrette but I donated it and now its chin length so i guess i'm just gonna wear it down and straight!
