Question about interview outfits for ladies

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
most girls, the good looking ones wear sexy tight black pants. Trust me, that is way hotter and more appealing to male interviewers than a knee high skirt...LOL 👍

make sure to wear T-underwear

What color shirts do you guys recommend?
I literally spent HOURS at the mall today trying to decide on colors. Lol.

I'm wearing a fairly bright shirt. Since my suit is pretty conservative, and only a little bit of the shirt is actually showing, I decided to go with a small pop of color! Plus it matches the lining of my jacket.

Thanks a lot! I was thinking the same thing too, but didn't know if that was the norm or not.

I got a bunch of shirts to try with my suit...all are pretty bright though. The frontrunner is a colorful reddish/other color ruffly tank. Like toothy said, it's only a little showing with a conservative suit anyway.

Update: I bought pantyhose. 😳 I actually got thigh-highs too which seem pretty cute...if they're comfortable I may actually wear them.😱

So...I got this full black suit (jacket with pants) with an ivory top at banana republic for $350! 😱 Is it how much it's supposed to be?!?!
I really like the quality and how it fits. But damn...it's freakin so expensive! :scared: And now I kinda want to get a skirt too!!! 😍 But my friends are telling me one pair should be enough...but I can't resist this temptation of getting an extra pair with a skirt next time. Is there any place I can get a cute pair with a reasonable price? 😀

I got a skirt suit from Banana Republic for $300!! And then later bought a shirt from there for $60! I know how you feel! 😱 Yet, I keep coming back and looking around at other stores, because I want to get a variety. LOL.

Express and The Limited have cute skirts for a more reasonable price. Also, if you sign up with their e-mail list, it should save you a load of money.

I got my suit at the Limited for under 200..coupons help!

Banana is so nice but so expensive...maybe when I'm a dentist I'll be able to afford shopping there 😛

ughhh that's where i wanted to get my suit from, but i was having trouble with their petite sizes... those suits are gorgeous. but instead of buying a whole other suit just so you can get a skirt, i'm almost positive banana also has skirts in the same material as the pants of all their suits. try it out!

Anne Taylor Loft has great petite suits. I got mine on sale online last December: a wool-blend jacket, pants and pencil skirt, for about $150 total.

By the way, those thigh-highs don't always stay up -- the last thing you want to do is keep hiking up your thigh-highs during your interview!

From everything I've heard as of late, pantyhose are no longer required. Thank God!!! I think you would be fine to skip them! Good luck!

I say that every time I walk pass the store's windows lol!

I got a really nice suit at Macy's that was definitely expensive...almost as much as the Banana Republic suits. But....when it rang up.... it was $99!!!! My mom and I almost fell in the floor when the cashier told us. Love a sale. 😍

Love that feeling =D

if anyone sees a chick with leopard print undershirt..... that would be me 😀

I got a really nice white shirt called "tuxedo shirt" from J. Crew Outlet for 35 dollars. It's simple and white, nice cut, with a little tiny bit of interesting ruffles on the front

I am finding it impossible to find a nice pair of black heels (shiny preferably) under $50 bucks.
any ideas?

oh btw, I bought a nice gray suit from New York & Company for $115... =D

I don't know if they have any shiny ones, but I bought a pair of black pointy heels at Famous Footwear for ~$30 bucks. Maybe there's something there that you'll like, and they ALWAYS have great sales.

And like Kneecoal said, try clearance racks at dept. stores. I've found AMAZING deals there as well!

I got a pair of pointy mid-heel Bandolino's at Macy's for 50 bucks, everyday value. Unfortunately most stores this time of year have marked down their sandals, not their conservative professional shoes!

Of all the interviews I went to, only one girl wore a skirt. I didn't pay attention to her legs though, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if she was wearing pantyhose or not. Sorry! 😀

I do know that she did not get accepted into the school. But I don't think there is a correlation here.

Since I had the same question on my mind, I decided to wear a pantsuit for all my interviews. I liked it better. In some interviews, you have to sit directly in front of the interviewer(s) with no desk in between you.

Hope this info helps you out 🙂 Good luck on all your interviews!!

I would have preferred pants but they were a good $30 more expensive.

Thanks for all the shoe responses ladies!
I went with a budget in mind (50$) and checked out the mall.. found a nice pair for 44 (Rack Room) ... went to the register and YAAAAAAAAY it was for 35!!!!

So total:
New York &Co Jacket and skirt: 115
Shoes: 35
Inner shirt: 20
Total: 170
**Oh wait, +$6 for pantyhose!!!

Cross your fingers that thats the end of the purchases.

would you guys say peep-toes are strictly off limits? i do like me some nice peep-toes.

You might want to check and make sure your toes look nice and no weird nails, otherwise I wouldn't wear them. And if the heels are too high, you'll be walking like a pingouin.

I think peep-toe shoes would work if you are wearing pants. I wouldnt risk doing two no-no's (no pantyhose AND peep toe)
I have been convinced to wear pantyhose after reading a few people's comments 🙂

I wore pantyhose!! When I actually tried them I found them to be super comfortable and nice looking, but I didn't realize they'd make my shoes fit more loosely so I had a close call with an emergency run to Walgreens an hour before my interview...but it worked out..

I really didn't feel like anyone was looking at what anyone was wearing. Of the five girls at my interview, 3 wore skirts, 2 wore pants...and all 3 in skirts wore pantyhose. As long as you feel professional you will be fine. Really anything goes as long as you look professional and FEEL good about yourself!

hey ladies, so black panty hose is ok then? i read some comment before about thigh highs falling down and such but i found a great (cheap) pair that has a silicone backing where the elastic is and they stayed up for a night of dancing (if any of you were wondering about that.) I'm getting pretty excited for interviews!!

i don't know about black panty hose, to be honest. i feel like "panty hose" is supposed to be nude colored. any other color is just tights (although i know people will say that tights are opaque). i have a general aversion to any sort of tights/panty hose, but if i HAVE to wear them, i feel like they should be nude. more professional.

👎 black pantyhose for interviews

Alright ladies.... I had my 1st interview last week and there were 4 girls (including me). Thought you'd wanna know what they wore!

I mentioned what I wore in an earlier post...black pinstripe pants suit with a teal shell, closed toe black shiny shoes, pearls. Hair half up.

Girl #2. Skirt suit, short sleeved. Fuchsia shell. No panty hose. Adorable ruched (sp?) black closed toe shoes (nine west). Hair worn down, then put in a pony tail later after interview.

Girl #3. Black pants suit. The jacket did not button closed...kinda different. Not your typical jacket! Red shell, black closed toe shoes. Hair worn down

Girl #4. Black skirt suit. Blue, long-sleeved blouse tucked into skirt. Panty hose! Hair worn down, black closed toe, pointy shoes.

Hope this helps 🙂

I am loving this thread. It has great info. Although I havent yet been invited for any interviews but I am hopeful and waiting :xf:

I am still confused about a good purse to carry.

Are you going to carry a briefcase/or one of those notepads for interviews which are in this black binder that zips up??

and are you going to just carry that or will you also carry a purse along with that??? wouldn't it be weird carrying a briefcase AND a purse?

And then if you are carrying both the things then what kind of purses are you gals gonna carry? I only own like 3 purses---all are sorta big (but none are the kind you can hang from a shoulder--i think that makes sense)---one is dark tan coach purse with the coach logos printed on it--its cute but I am confused it i can carry it. It is about the height of a 3 ring binder and probably as wide as the binder too.

my second purse is a Louis vuitton--again very cute--white with colored logo on it--I would love it carry it but I am not sure if it is a good idea😕

3rd one is another louis vuitton--cream/grey checkered. This is sorta big but no logos 👍 just checkered so more conservative. Will this work😕

4th i can borrow my mom's louis vuitton again but i think its quite big---but its tan color--which would have looked good with the suit i am wearing.

I am super confused if I should carry a purse? or a briefcase only or both? and if both then what purse? I was also thinking what if I just throw my wallet in the briefcase??

hey toothay, hope your interview went well. thanks for being such a good spy! lol so what exactly is a shell? and some of the skirt suits didn't have blazers then?

Oops, I wasn't clear! Both of the skirt suits wore blazers. One of the girls blazers was short sleeved with a belt. It still looked nice and she wasn't burning up like the rest of us! The other girl wore a long sleeved black blazer over her blue button down 🙂

A shell is a nice sleeveless top. Sometimes it is ruched or has ruffles...or beading, or just a nice plain silky top. A bit more feminine than the traditional Oxford!

navneetdh - I took a rather large black bag. I held it in my hands all day, not slinging it over my shoulder (which would have been hard!) It had three compartments. One I used for typical purse content, the middle I used for a pair of loafers for the tour (BEST DECISION EVER!), and the last compartment I used for all the info they gave us that day!

Got my suit (pants) last weekend at Anne Taylor!! Petite 00.. the only suit in the world that would fit me.. i went thru 10 different stores. Charcoal color with hot pink inside lining for $150 🙂! Going to match it with a white shirt embedded tiny gold vertical stripes. Not Sure what type of shoes.. I feel like i should dye my hair back to black just to match my black shoes.. a little extreme i know. Not sure what type of purse i should bring either. My mom was thinking about lending me her LV.. but it's navy blue 😵.. Maybe i should stick to my longchamp 😵? How are you girls doing your hair??

are you supposed to tuck in shells? I saw a cute one today but it was slightly longer than the suit jacket, but looked really puffy when tucked in (one of the flowy ones).

are you supposed to tuck in shells?

Yes! For a puffy shirt you may try tucking it into your pantihose to keep it in place, or else choose a shell that doesn't puff up when tucked in.

there's been a number of mentions/opinions on bags - what's the big deal with having one to go over your shoulder? i bought a smaller, maybe 14" by 6" over the shoulder bag... why can't you just hold onto the stuff they give you?

peep toes are not allowed. as a general rule, any doctor/nurse/student are required to wear closed toed shoes while in the clinic which you will visit as part of the tour.

I think i get the idea. seems like the purses should be somewhat like we carry to class or school. Huh. loafers --👍 i would not have thought to do this in a million years. Thanks. I just have to figure out a decent looking bag now.

Hey I was wondering if you guys are taking anything specific in your purse or bag with you for the interview. I know flip flops or loafers are one. Anything else. These are great pointers.

Also, I am not sure if this a stupid question but i will ask anyways --- are we suppose to take the certificates etc which we got for participating in extra curricular that we mentioned on AADSAS. For example I was on debating team and I mentioned winning quite a few competitions. Now should I take my certificates with me ?

meh, i think that's a little over the top. i was also thinking about bringing my digital camera to take pics of the campus to remember what it looks like later.

Hey ladies! Okay quick question. This may have been answered earlier and I am sorry if it has been.

I have my first interview tomorrow and I was wondering what the 'appropriate' way to wear your hair on interview day would be? My hair is super long and I don't really want to wear it pulled back. Is it okay to wear it down and just pin back your bangs in a way so nothing is falling in your face?

Thanks for the advice!

i always wonder what people mean when they say their hair is "super long." when i hear that, i think down to your butt. i'd say just make sure it's not in your face. or maybe half up half down? good luck tomorrow!

Do you ladies think it is absolutely necessary to wear a blazer/jacket? Would black pants and a cute top be okay? or do have to wear a complete suit? Thanks for the advice!

i dont think it is absolutely necessary -- one of the girls at the interview had on black pants and a navy blue long sleeve shirt. It looked nice. You have to be able to pull of such a look though... Not just something you threw on.
For the girl I saw, it was probably because her shirt was long sleeved that made is more "professional"

Also, make sure you are comfortable with it. Remember, all the other girls are probably going to wear suits... so are you okay looking like the odd one out?
