I'm a 4th year med student applying to family medicine. I submitted my application over the weekend. My application is incomplete because I only have 1 out of 3 letters uploaded to ERAS. My situation is different because I originally intended to apply to a surgical sub-specialty. I did 2 surgical subi's and got 2 great letters, but the letter writers recommended me for that specialty in my letter and not family medicine. I have 1 IM letter already sent and I was wondering if I could use those 2 surgery letters to complete and my application. I know this is less than ideal, but I'm desperate!

I am doing a Family Medicine subi next month (it was hard to find a FM subi in August because I was so gung ho about something else that I never thought about FM until I realized surgery wasn't for me during the subi about a month ago). So why FM? I realized I miss general medicine and did some soul searching realized that although I love procedures, I really enjoyed obgyn, peds, psych, etc (bascially every specialty). I also enjoy clinic and love the variety that FM provides.... Anyway, I will get a letter from FM next month from my subi, but I still need 3 letters to be complete and start getting interviews before everybody else takes them. I did get one interview offer despite not being complete.

Do you think it's ok to send the surgery letters anyway? They remark on my personality, my clinical skills, etc very well... otherwise i'm not sure what to do.... Thanks!

And please.. dont' flame me. I'm not applying to FM as a backup. Rather I'm switching tracks and in need of some advice.. thanks!

No worries, I switched late also. Most programs require at least one letter from a family doc, I think. I would ask one of the attendings to adjust the letter (if you are comfortable asking them that), to say, "OD will make a great resident" as opposed to surgery resident, etc...

Do you have any fam med contacts from your fam med rotation third year? (or did you have that rotation?)
