I thought I fully understood this but then re-read the NRMP guidebook and am a little confused...

Say a place offers advanced and categorical spots, and I ranked the advanced track #1 with a supplemental list for a transitional year, and then ranked the categorical program #2- and I was able to match on the advanced track list but NOT for the transitional year program, would NRMP try to rank me in the categorical program (my #2 choice)? And then so on down my list until it fit me appropriately into a situation with all 4 years accounted for?

OR would it keep me in the spot for the advanced track (since I ranked it higher) and then I'd be stuck doing SOAP for a PGY1 spot?

I'm unsure if it uses my primary ranking as a trump card over "matching" into all 4 years (categorical or advaned + PGY1) or if it attempts to rank someone for all 4 years and uses that as the top priority.

I'd appreciate clarification- thanks!

my understanding is that you'll be stuck with SOAP if you don't match your prelim. it doesn't go down on rank list

Once you match for the advanced spot you are done. If you didn't match a PGY-1 year, then you will need to scramble for it.

That is my understanding as well. NRMP will try to get you into your top spot for your main focus of your training, your advanced spot. So it will slot you into the spot and let you fill the other if you go unmatched for that. It is something to consider as you are making your rank list. Some would rank the categorical spot first to try and avoid that scenario.

Good luck!

This is why you should have more than one program on your supplemental list. The match looks only at your primary list for the first run of the algorithm. You get a match (advanced or categorical).

If the match is advanced, it then runs the algorithm with the appropriate supplemental list for the preliminary program. If you fall off your supplemental list, you need to enter SOAP for a preliminary position.

I agree with all of the other posters. It is based on your primary rank list.
The rank process matches you first to your primary (either categorical or advanced). If the position is advanced, the algorithm then tries to match you via the supplemental.

On Monday, you will get an email:
1. Congratulations, you have matched! (categorical or advanced+prelim)
2. Congratulations, you have matched to an advanced position but not a first year position!
3. Congratulations, you have matched to a one-year position!
4. We are sorry, you did not match to any position!
5. You are NOT matched because you did not submit a certified rank order list!
6. You are NOT matched because you are withdrawn!
