Hello all,

If I have a 35R on my MCAT now, but am considering retaking to get a 40+, should I just apply to DO schools this coming cycle with the 35 and not send a higher score if I get it? The reason I am asking is I want to know if a 40+ may make me "overqualified" for DO programs even though I greatly want an acceptance at my home state DO program (MSUCOM).

This will not end well...

:troll:

If your score is anything under a 42, you should retake. You might have a chance with that 35 to make it into AUA or another Caribbean school like that. I wouldn't put my hopes on the big 3 as you'd be at a disadvantage unless you're URM and your GPA is a 3.9.

Hope it helps.

I don't understand why this topic is not taken seriously. My GPA is extremely poor and there are plenty of people in my situation .

There are also 100000000 threads about "being overqualified" for DO. Seriously, go troll somewhere else. Better yet... go post in the MCAT forums or pre-allo about retaking a 35.

A simple no would have sufficed. Thanks for the help, however askew it was.

This is really a pretty poor attempt at trolling, I might ad. You have to have at least a couple of other posters convinced, otherwise there is no ensuing debate, and your thread dies young. This one might have worked in the allo forum, but not here.

In a lot of respects a 35 on the MCAT is superior to a 42. If you score a 42 it may make the impression to the admissions committee that you are a student who is simply not teachable. You want to show them that you have some inadequacies so that they can mold you into the student you need to be.

With that said, in your situation, I think I would retake and shoot for at least a 23. Your 35 shows far too much intelligence for an osteopathic school and at this rate you will not be accepted this term.

qft. No one likes an overachiever, especially medical school admissions departments.

Troll or no troll, the honest answer is that you shouldn't ever fool yourself into thinking that one line on your application makes up for another line on your application.

Competition in DO and MD schools is such that any area that is "extremely poor" is going to kill most applications even if you've done really well in other areas.

Apply now, don't worry about changing your MCAT score.

In the meanwhile, take extra courses and raise your GPA so that when/if you have to apply next year you won't be in the same situation. Even if you can't raise your GPA that much, an upward trend will look nice.
