I'm interested in becoming a pharmacist but I also want to be (sometime during my life) a professor, do research, and work at a company like pfizer, and be a pharmacist at a hospital(this first, probably). My plan is to get a Bachelor's Degree in biology or chemistry, get my PharmD, and then later, get a PhD in an area related to bio or pharmacy.

Will this work out? At this point, I don't have much knowledge about how all the degree thing and the jobs work out, but I know that I definitely would love to conduct my own research and be a professor, but also work at a hospital...

Should I try to get my B.S. within three years (I may die, yeah) to save myself time...? Would this be ok when I go to get my PhD?

What kind of things would one do working at pfizer (with PharmD)?

Please teach me all you know about this...=] THANK YOU

Is being an obonoxious douche a part time job of yours ?

Quit belittling people and projecting your own insecurities and lack of ambition onto them - it's getting on my nerves.

Morning Snow - I'll pm you when my finals are over in 2 weeks - I'm pursuing a Pharm.D right now, but I, myself, am interested in a joint degree program and met a couple people that have finished their Pharm.Ds and working on a Ph.D component right now. I'll share with you what I have learned so far when I have more time.

I was serious.

I want to be a PharmD and an Astronaut. This is my lifelong dream.

Tell me what I must do to achieve my goal.

I can eagery guide you in the Pharm.D direction, for the astronautics portion consult a pre-astronautics forum.

Hornblower, just FYI - once you do start a pharmacy program, you'll have to take the Oath of a Pharmacist, here's a line from it:

"I will utilize my knowledge, skills, experiences, and values to prepare the next generation of
pharmacists."

This will probably explain to you why pharmacy students try hard to be supportive and kind to pre-pharmers.

Hornblower could have been a bit nicer, but you do seem awfully ambitious, while not very far in your career. This can be a recipe for burnout. I myself just finished a PhD this summer, after deciding two years ago that I wanted to switch to pharmacy. I absolutely love working in the pharmacy and learning about the career, but the first year courses are a bit monotonous, not to mention that I'm a bit burned out at the moment.

Like others said before, everything that you want to do, you can do without a PhD. Personally, I'd take more time for your undergrad career and do real research while you're there. Try to get into a lab that does as close to pharmaceutical research as you can. You can also do research at a pharmaceutical company while in undergrad, especially over the summers. If you do both of these, you can get an idea of which you like better. FYI, it's hard to switch back to academia after industry.

You're probably not going to want to give up your good salary after a few years of a PharmD career to go back to being a peon in someone's lab as a grad student. If you want both degrees, look into the dual degree programs. Or decide on research (pharmacology or medicinal chemistry do research related to pharmacy) and just get the PhD.

One more thing: biological research is hard and doesn't usually work the way you want it to quickly. Be prepared for lots of failure. Which is why I suggest trying it out extensively before pursuing it as a career.

I know this might be a different direction, altogether, but I know there are PGY-2/PhD programs you can do.

I'm sure I'll be bombarded with other options in the years to come, but one that has my attention is the Psychiatric Pharmacy residency at the University of Texas. One option allows you to become BCPP certified AND get a PhD (with 80% tuition covered because you're an active resident).
