Hello everyone,

I am a premed and have been reading a lot of the threads involving the shift work and from what I understand there is a lot of movement at least earlier in ones career.

My question is, would it be realistic to negotiate with a group where you work exclusively evening or night shifts? Such as an 11am-11pm or 7pm-7am shifts for every shift that you work?

I'm a volunteer EMT-B....as well as a waiter so I work every weekend, holiday and night. That aspect isn't going to bother me in the slightest as I as well as my family has gotten used to that already.

Thank you in advance for reading and any response would be greatly appreciated.

You could almost certainly negotiate with many groups to exclusively do the 7p-7a shift. I know a couple of people who have done just that.

However, 11a-11p would be much more difficult, as these are the peak earning hours and I have a feeling people would be less willing to give up exclusivity in any sort of an RVU-based pay system.

Oh ok, well that would be fine. I figure I could work from 7pm-7am, go to the gym after work at like 8am-10am then probably head home and sleep (or stay up and watch some football if it's Sunday!😀). Most of my friends at least now get off of work around 5 pm now anyway so on days i'd have off I could always do things then. Also I guess I could factor in days that i'm off if I have a family by then (hopefully) when they get home from school I could spend good time with them as well.

That's jumping the gun a little bit, but I was reading about how flexible the shifts where and was wondering just how flexible they were. In any case i'm not a morning person anyway so nights would probably suit me better.

Thank you so much for the reply.

my group has dedicated nocturnists that work 7p-3a or 11p-7a. Thanks to those guys, I just work days and evenings and never have to work an overnight period.

i'll add that often time negotiating to do exclusive overnights is often seen as a bonus to the group - you could get fewer shifts or a slightly higher rate for agreeing to do that.

which is how it works at my shop. there's a 4 shift differential for the same pay.

7pm-3am doesn't sound bad at all to me. I'm a night person (as i'm WIDE awake right now at 2am) and I wouldn't mind doing that at all, would actually prefer it as that would be absolutely perfect. Even a 5pm-3am would be nice.

That said, do you still get to do some good work at those times? I wouldn't be sitting around doing nothing would I? I'm sure it depends but i'm just asking in general.

Thanks again for the replys.

I work in an ED that sees 100k visits/yr. There's work to be done at all times. Rarely do the 11p-7a people have nights that we consider 'slow' (i.e. seeing 15 patients per side on a shift).
