i am applying to dental school this cycle. i did tell my recruiter that i would go with 4 year hpsp but now i changed my mind. is it possible to shorten the commitment length? do we get to pick which of years I want to be on scholarship like from freshman-junior year or from sophmore to senior? also would i still be eligible for the signing bonus if i decide to go with 2 or 3 year scholarship?

I'm pretty sure the sign on bonus is for 4 year only.

Is there really a big enough reason to do 3 years instead of 4?

i was originally planning on going to nyu with 4 year scholarship but now i want to go to my state school-buffalo and i figure that i could use the stafford loan and savings from the stipends to pay for the 4th year so that I would be back to the civilian world a year early.

If you want the 3 year instead of the 4 year, then don't apply now. You'll only get the 4 year. You'd have to wait until you in school and apply for the 3 year.

Also remember that eventhough you only do 3 years active you will still have a total commitment of 8 years, meaning that you will spend 5 years in the IRR.

In my opinion if you are going to take the HPSP, the best deal is the 4 year scholarship, if you are comfortable going into debt, and worried about when you'll get back to the civilian side, bite the bullet and just take out loans.

Have you asked your recruiter? You should feel free to discuss this kind of matter with him/her.
