Okay, serious question here. I'm having trouble finding a sports bra that A) comes in plus sizes and B) is not made of paper thin material which makes it, um... immodest. Any suggestions?

PS I am so excited about being half naked in a room full of people.

Two paper-thin sports bras together = one proper sports bra (and looks vaguely Battlestar Galactica, which is always a plus)

You know what, I highly advocate the use of those paper-thin sports bras. Not only for their superior range of motion, but also for their effect on increasing the morale during particularly boring OMM sessions 👍

Hence the "no men allowed"... put it back in your pants, cowboy :lame:

I consulted my expert friends... They said: 1, moving comfort http://www.movingcomfort.com/ and 2, Macy's... either way, you'll probably have to pay a little more for the heavier fabrics, but both were said to be worth the extra money due to long lasting quality... Hope that is helpful, and thanks for the heads up for the future!

I don't find this thread arousing whatsoever, I had high hopes!

I am what PC people would call "well-endowed". I just wear a regular bra with a wife beater. It's never been an issue. Do some med schools make you take off your shirt or something?

Good question. I am a very modest person, I don't wear tanks even. I am not "excited" about exposing myself. I am glad to see the above comment on the wife beater. Will def try that, when it's my time. Thanks!

Wait. Who is taking off clothes during OMM? I've had DO friends who are uber conservative and there's no way they wore anything less than 3/4 sleeves and full pants.

Is this just a rule against underwire? Cause I can understand that can get in the way.

I'm also "well endowed" and love a good sports bra since I play competitive volleyball regularly. My favorites are the victoria secret line (although sadly I think they either discontinued or in the process of discontinuing this line of bra) and supernova/tech sports bras from adidas. They can get pricey--so if you have a nordstrom rack or a nice TJMaxx nearby, check those out first. I'm also pretty happy with my Under Armour bras as far as support and comfort goes but the material isn't as thick.

Exactly what I was thinking my man :highfive:

What are you, 18? Let's put you at the front of a cold lab in a jock strap. Not so funny now, eh? Remember the Sinfeld episode?

Yea that's not gonna stop anyone of us guys. My personal experience with OMM is that all the dudes are taking off their clothes at the first opportunity and just chilling with just their gym shorts on. <---- Thats the average guy.

And over at my school you need to definitely spend a good amount of time with no shirt on and just the sports bra on. The ladies go running back to their shirts the second the technique is over, but still you spent a whole lot of time with shirts off. There are very few people who are excepted.

Interesting. Different rules, different schools. The huge Mormon population at AZCOM would be pissed if we had to take off our shirts. Guess I lucked out 🙂

I wonder if this has ever become incentive for some guys to go the DO route.

Yea. Interestingly, my school has a big orthodox (and non-orthodox as well) Jewish population. We just pair the orthodox jewish girls with other orthodox jewish girls or with women adherent muslims. But they'd still have to go down to the sports bra occasionally. Though I know a few people got totally around it, they are the minority even in the groups that generally have a reason to want to be partnered with other women only.

Want to be modest but cant wait to be half naked? lol!

stupid question: whats wrong with regular bras? <--- did i miss something at admitted student day? all this talk of nudity makes me wonder....

WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO!???!!?!?!

I'm at KCOM and we have a big Mormon population too, but I'd say shirts were off (men with nothing, women with sports bras) for 90% of thoracic OMT, a big chunk of lumbar, etc.

Honestly, I knew people who were worrying about this stuff at the beginning too, but wait until you have to do something like palpate someone's pubic bones (superiorly, inferiorly, and anteriorly), do some of the indirect techniques on the sacrum, palpate an ischial tuberosity, etc, etc . Far, far, far more involved and personal than someone seeing you in a sports bra.

In my opinion, the nervousness dissipates quickly.

palpating people where???

do tanks really get in the way that much though? the consensus seems to be: males=no shirt, females=no shirt(sports bra only).

I [heart] shirts!

Lighten up a little 😛
I know it probably seems like innocent fun, but the original post expressed nervousness about wearing nothing but shorts and a sports bra in front of her classmates. It's pretty unkind to go out of one's way to pretty much assure her that yes, in fact, many of her classmates will be sure to be ogling her boobs in an undoctorly way. There are better ways to be supportive (yes yes, no pun intended) of one's future classmates and colleagues.

I would ask you, megathunder, polarbear, and dharma to imagine what it would be like to be a female patient riding in an elevator with some male doctors.
One doctor says to the other, "I love the new thin gowns for patients, we can totally see the ladies' racks better through them!"
"Hurr huurr, yeah, boobs!"
"I was thinking of turning the air conditioning down in the examining room..."
"Oh, yeah, exactly what I was thinking my man!"

How is that patient going to feel when she gets to the examining room and the nurse hands her a thin gown? When her doctor comes in? Anytime she has to see a male doctor ever again after that?

I know you probably didn't mean to make futurepitt feel uncomfortable, or any of the other women who make up half of this forum. But can you see how that might have made someone uncomfortable? Especially someone who is modest and isn't looking forward to wearing so little?

Jagger's right that the shirtlessness is the least of one's worries, especially after the first lab or two - everyone's wearing the same amount as you, so it's more like being at the beach. And, face-to-face, people are professional and respectful (and, guys, I know that you would be professional and respectful if we were all half naked in an OMM lab together - I just ask that you extend that courtesy here. It's even more important on the internet, where people can't gauge your intent by your facial expression or tone of voice). The pubic symphysis stuff can be a little horrible, especially if the teacher uses you for demonstration or you get a bad partner...

I can see where you're coming from and if I offended anybody I apologize. My comment (along with mega, polar, and dharma I assume) was merely a joke, nothing more.

I feel like people take things way too seriously and get into a hubbub much too easily these days, so being the silly person I am I try to lighten things up all the time. Maybe this wasn't the thread to try such things though 😛

Oh hey guys, got the cheap red wine here. Heard theres a party....

Oh wait, no men. Dam it😱

Well men, the door is this way. Lets get drunk, watch some football, and be billigerent somewhere else 😛

Clothing does tend to get in the way and interfere with your palpatory skills, especially when you're just starting out. It's much easier to diagnose on skin than through clothing at first. A lot of the treatments are easier to do without fabric shifting around on you as well, especially HVLA (lumbar and thoracic especially when you're having to really do a lot of rotating and bracing of the upper body.)

boobs= fatty glandular tissue. Nothing more... I don't care if people see them touch them, what ever. I have had more med students and nursing students 'fondle' them due to being full of fibroid cysts than I can remember, I'm like a teachers aid and I'm not even IN med school... Btw, how do you think I'll feel, I'm a D and a B! It's ever so nice in a swimsuit... either way boys, I'm the kind of girl who says if you still think boobs are intriguing at your age you obviously haven't played with enough of them, it will get old soon enough, like sitting at a nudie bar, after awhile, it's all the same 😛

OP, here is another serious suggestion. The enell bra does an excellent job. I am extremely blessed and an athlete, so it is the only one that does the trick for me!

I don't really care either way re: stripping down for OMM. If people are too immature to handle it or are sexualizing the situation that much, they don't belong there, man.

Anyway, for sports bras in extended sizes --> www.barenecessities.com

NYCOM doesn't have a sports bra rule, what's the deal? I just wear shorts & a tanktop. Ohwellz

Title Nine is awesome and has a range of sizes. More "dumb bells" = more support, less bounce (for when you are working out, less necessary for OMM/OMT).

😍 Best Wishes. Peaches.

NIKE ..there's tons of very conservative & "high impact" (thick) sports bras

Thank you to the posters on this thread with serious suggestions. I'm not really offended by the guys' jokes on here. My guess is that most of them felt that humor was a way to lighten up my anxiety. I am likely to be the oldest student in the class so I am not worried about my peers ogling me in a sexual way. I am sure we'll all be professional about this when lab starts and I do realize from other threads about OMM lab attire that most people, men included, are anxious about this.

Yes, my school has men in just shorts and women in shorts and a sports bra for lab. In the pre-matriculation paperwork there was a page we had to sign acknowledging that this is required attire for lab. So, for most weeks I expect this will be the case. From reading previous threads on this, it appears that most DO schools require this attire though there are some that allow scrubs or bathing suits. Some schools apparently have curtains for privacy around each table but I have seen the lab at my school and it was just a big room full of tables with no curtains in sight.

A DO that I shadowed told me that he worked with MD and DO students and he felt the DO students really had a leg up when it came to doing physical exams on patients when they started rotations. The DO students get used to to touching other people from the first week of school because of OMM lab.

I can't say I am looking forward to being half naked but we'll all be going through it together so it is okay. By the way, most threads in pre-osteo are slow to pick up posts. Post a thread about bras and everyone is here! I also noticed the men ignored the "no men allowed" part!

I'm not a man. I'm a Bos taurus.

You can be silly, if you want, but to some of us this is serious. I am not there yet, so I don't know how I will feel about it. I may feel just fine in a sports bra, depending on who I am paired with. I may not. At this time, I wouldn't. Have had two babies close together and nothing seems to be where it should these days. Maybe it will help others be more sensitive, maybe not. There was a recent post on this that was very interesting. I know there are others with much bigger concerns. I still am a very modest person and want to be covered. Guess I will put AZCOM and KCOM on my application list.

Maybe looking to the sports bra/tanks. I have a couple, they're tights and stretchy, but cover the waist and so maybe would help with that... Personally, I'd argue that it counts as a "sports bra" based on its design... And allows for more modesty in the midriff...

This is a great question for me to ask the schools I am interested in. I think I know what type of tops you are talking of. Those would be a lot better. Thanks for the suggestion!

the men stayed out, because we all know boobs are a boys thing. :meanie:

Telling a man not to be silly is like telling a woman not be emotional, we each have are ways of dealing with things, ours is just more fun.

And this is probably one of the funniest threads I've seen in a while.

So, I don't even get the option to cover up my boobs? I call out sexism here. Us fat men must unite for modesty.

I'll second this. Much thicker fabric and fun colors! I've got a bunch 🙂

It's really not so bad once you get past the first few weeks. I prance around in a bikini all the time yet I was really hesitant to walk around in lab without a shirt on. But I was also afraid to touch people then, too...I look back and how terrified I was and laugh now at how silly I was being.

And FWIW, I have only once ever had anyone comment on how I look with regards to lab, and we weren't in lab at the time. I would say overall people are very respectful and non-judgmental.

You're obviously not a guy. Yeah, the nudie bar thing does get old, but not the playing.

 yeah you gotta feel for those who will be rocking c-cup man boobs!

Hmmm well, then i vote to not wear any thing at all, my problem isn't with my boobs, its with the rest of my abdominal region (not a pretty site on a woman who's had two kids!) that way the chest area will be a distraction from the rest of it

OP, there are lots of full coverage type sports bras that arent so thin. It's always easier for smaller sizes but if you have a bigger cup you're gonna want a thick or at least stiffer type material.

I like this Victorias Secret bra. It's cute and looks like something you could just wear outside.

I hate their sizes but their bras are cute.

Edit: Although with larger cup sizes thered be more cleavage which is probably what you're trying to avoid. I'm sure they have the ones that dont dip so low as well.

One of my male friends was going to wear a sports bra under his shirt for a practical one time. In theory, he would have sat down with a partner (who was being graded), an OMM doc, and when told to take his shirt off so the individual being tested could perform the treatments ... BAM - dude in a sports bra.

I was in tears during the planning phases, but eventually, we decided it would goof up the person taking the test, so it was scrapped (for now).
