In which situations is it justified to apply to medical schools before starting a year-long SMP or post-bacc, and when should one apply after that program is done?

Thanks for your help!

if u have high enough gpa and mcat to get into medical school.... in that case you wouldnt be even needing the smp...

smp are for people who dont have high enough gpa but good mcat or vice versa..

Usually people apply after their smp is finished for the following year med school admissions.

It all depends on the quality of your application as it is now. If you have a decent pre-SMP GPA (3.2-3.5), a decent MCAT score (32+), plenty of clinical and research EXP, recs are all in, and you're AMCAS can be sent in within the next couple weeks...THEN you could apply now.

If you have a really bad GPA, and need the SMP as a do-or-die thing, it might be best to wait until after you've shown you can handle the rigorous coursework.

If you're doing a post-bacc and still need to take the MCAT, I'd wait until after your year is done.

Pretty much, think about whether or not you have a chance without doing your post-bacc/SMP. If your only concern is a mildly low GPA, and you know you're going to rock your classes this fall, then apply during your program.
