Does anyone know how hands-on the clerkship rotations are for third-year and fourth-year students at yale? Are they just relegated to a shadowing role, or do they get their hands dirty?
Hands dirty, very dirty. Of course, it depends on the site of the clerkship and the resident and attending running your team, but my experience has been that you get to do anything that you are inclined to do, even procedures (with supervision and guidance, of course!). There is plenty of one-on-one time with patients and their families, and the staff and consult services treat you like a full-fledged member of the clinical team.
Love Rugtrousers and always respect her take on life, esp. Yale life. However, I think she'll back me up when I say "hands on" is completely resident/team dependent. Sometimes you luck out, sometimes you don't. Had 2 LP patients today who just kept saying (over and over and over), "no students, I don't want any students doing my tap." Keeping my fingers crossed that patients tomorrow might be amenable to students doing procedures.
