I am moving to Univ of Iowa for a year to do research as part of Doris Duke CLin Res Fellows. If there is anyone in the state of Iowa reading this please let me know where to live. I just want to gather an idea about the area before I go out there. I am in Miami right now and grea up in DC so I am sure it will be a culture shock but I am excited for the opportunity.

Congrats on getting the duke...I'm a native Iowan and likely going to go to Iowa next year (although I may end up at Mayo). That said Iowa City isn't bad its a big college town and the health sciences/law campus is pretty compact. As far as living is concerned university heights is the area in the closest proximity to the MERF, medical labs, UIHC etc. the places where you will most likely be working...there are apartments, duplexes, rooms in houses throughout that area available that would all be pretty much around a 15 minute walk. Thats the closest your gonna get if you want to walk everyday. Other than that there are plenty of apartments geared for the undergrads around, lots in downtown, a huge complex called the Lodge (extremely nice and pretty quit) a ways out. The key is to find something located near a cambus line that runs up to the medical campus as parking is limited and expensive...although you might be able to park in a staff lot so who knows. Lots of people live in neighboring corallville and take the bus so that could also be an option...but I personally would rather be in walking distance to either downtown or the medical campus if not both. if you want more specifics feel free to PM me and I can send you some links or what not.
