Question for the future..

Hi everyone, I am currently applying to med school and hopefully will get in, but I have been thinking about areas that interest me and that I would maybe want to enter in the future. I know I will probably change my mind more than once, but as of right now, I am really interested in fertility/infertlity. I tried looking into the area but have not found much talk about it. Do you go into ob/gyn and then do a subspecialty, or something else? Tyhanks for your time

I don't know if fertility specialists are actually trained through fellowships accredited by the ACGME, so it may be that you can be anything from an OB/GYN to an internist and still become an expert in fertility. My best guess, however, would be that you'd probably end up training in OB/GYN, as I believe they play around with all that in vitro fertilization stuff.

Reproductive endocrinology.

Endo is a speciality of internal medicine, so training would be approx.

3 years internal medicine residency, then 2 years endocrinology metabolism and diabetes residency, then 1 year reproductive endo fellowship.

There might be a way to get there from OB, but I don't know of it.

Also, you may get more posts if you edit your original to have a more descriptive title.

There was a very well-known reproductive endocrinology specialist at the hospital I worked at who was also an OB there. I wonder, did he do BOTH residencies then?

Most of the reproductive endocrinologists I've met (at Hopkins) were trained in Ob/Gyn and did a fellowship.
