I made the switch back to pre-DO after going pre-dental for a couple of years, (I graduated in 2003)... I'm from Michigan and I really want to get into MSUCOM for many reasons; My GPA was 3.81 in biology at Arizona State, I'm taking the MCAT in april.. I just had a few questions for those of you who are accepted:

- how much volunteer/work experience do you have in the medical field.. I now live in very rural Michigan and I just can't find much except volunteer work.
- what was your GPA/MCAT ?
- what do you think personally was the most significant thing about yourself that got you into school?

anyone who replies, I appreciate it.. I'm stressing already and its 5 months before the MCAT.

I had quite a bit of volunteer experience in the medical field, worked in OR and ER at seperate times, shadowed a DO for a year and an MD for a week, also was involved heavily in a DO premed club at MSU.

My GPA wasnt great(engineering major) 3.35, but my science GPA was higher then my overall GPA. (Calc II and III brought me down)
my MCAT was a 28O s

I think being involved in PRE-SOMA at MSU, an undergrad pre-DO club helped me out the most.

I would say you need to do some health related things, where in Michigan are you at. Just go to a clinic or doctor's office and ask if you can shadow the doc for a day, or any hospitol will allow you to help around. Just need to ask, you probably will need to go through training or something though

I really didn't have much volunteer work, but I worked full time in medical offices for about 6 years and have been part time for two more. I think that was really what set me apart. Also, I was an art student for a couple of years during a time when I didn't know what I wanted to do. So, I think I was a pretty well rounded applicant. My grades are above average. But, my MCAT score was only a 25. Have you offerred to volunteer at any small clinics? They usually have filing or envelope stuffing to be done. Or, just find a couple of docs to shadow with the hopes of getting a good DO recommendation. Godo Luck!

6 years as a paramedic, 3 years in urgent care, worked full time through college, tons of volunteer experience both medical and non-medical, hundreds of shadowing hours.

gpa was 3.35, science 3.2 and MCAT was 28Q

I think my experience in the medical field and my knowledge and interest in osteopathic medicine helped a lot. I also had great DO LOR's.

I had the average amount of volunteer activity...none in hospitals (which some people look down upon), but a lot with sick children - camp counselor - chair of planning committee for american cancer society camps...etc.

GPA: 3.42
MCAT: 30M

Good Luck.

All of you are Michigan residents? I hear you have little chance if you're not from Michigan which is a shame.

I am a MI resident. They accept only 10% out of state students, which, IMO, is Not a shame because my state taxes I have been paying all my life help support the institution. If you are out of state and really want to go here, though, its far from impossible.

thanks all for replying.
