How many of you had kids during dental school or in the first years of practicing? How hard was it to balance that and did you do full-time daycare etc? Any with multiple young children?

I can't speak for myself. but at one of my interviews, a 4th year talked about how she has a 6 month old baby. When she was pregnant, she was working on all her requirements and was able to take a 3 month leave...but from her explanation, some of this was in the summer. she said she had 2 kids..

I'm talking about caring for children & working. It's hard but if u can organize ur time between whats need to be done at home & ur job it will work. You need a reliable baby sitter or a good child care though!!
Alot of clinics open 4 days a week which is helpful too. Good luck 🙂

I adopted a one year old child in the middle of my fourth year. At this point I was done with most of my requirements. It still was a bit of a juggle. we did use full time daycare. It wasn't as hard as I expected it to be though. When you have to do something for a child, you just do it.

I am now a year and a half out and I now also have a son. We use full time day care. I think the demands of a job are harder than what I experienced the last few months of school. For me a lot of it is mental though. I have a hard time focusing on both my kids and all of their needs and thinking about buying a practice and all that will entail. I'm handling residency pretty well, but the thought of having the responsibility of running a practice seems a bit huge to me right now. I feel like I won't be able to do both jobs fully and I don't want to do either of them half-assed.

Right now I'm looking for a job for when I finish my residency in June. I'm looking at group practices because I think this will work better for me in my situation.

I am hoping to start dental school this fall, and I have 2 kids. I have a 12yo son and a 2 yo daughter. We are also planning to have another while in dental school (3 or 4th year) I am 32 now so my clock is ticking 😉.

I take advantage of after school programs for my son, he does not need picked up until 6 pm and in our county it is free. My daughter goes to an at home daycare and her hours are 6 am to 6 pm, I am also very lucky with the woman who provides care for my daughter, she loves my daughter and has helped out MANY times after hours for certain situations that have come up.

I have a schedule at home that I try to stick to as much as possible. From when I get home to when the kids go to bed, my time is spent with them, cooking dinner, helping with homework and playing/reading to my daughter. After my daughter is in bed at 8 PM my son goes to his room (unless he needs me for something) and he goes to bed at 9PM so from 8-9 I clean up and from 9-11 I study. 11 pm I am in bed and I am up at 6 am and we are out of the house by 7. That is during the week.

On weekends I still get up at 6 am, I will clean or study until the kids get up, my daughter will get up around 8 and my son sometime around 11. Sat we do our shopping and any errands. We spend the day together. I study/clean during my daughter's nap and then I study again after the kids are in bed.

Sunday is usually the same as Sat. But the key is to always have flexibility and be able to adjust, kids are unpredictable and the first thing you will give up is sleep, if the kids are sick, or just want mommy.

You can do it, but just realize if you were not a mom you would be a better student and if you are not a student you would be a better mom. You have to find a balance that you and your family are comfortable with.

On a side note my son was five when i went back to school and he sees my study habits (before my daughter was born we would sit at the dining room table and do our homeowkr together) he now has EXCELLENT study habits and is a straight A student. So there are other benefits to being in school while you are raising kids. When my daughter was an infant I read anatomy and biochemistry to her and she is 2 and now speaks in complete sentences and can recognize every letter of the alphabet and is learning to read simple words already.

Good luck in your choice to have kids during school. It is hard but to me it is also priceless to have both family and school at the same time 😀
