Hello, im applying to dental school this summer as well as taking my DAT's in june ( hopefully). I am anxious and am studying daily and my question is;

Where do i stand with my current stats? Honesty is very well appreciated.

Btw, my counselor told me my grades are fine, just need some volunteering and dental shadowing as well as a great DAT score.

My current stats are

3.46 cumulative gpa, 3.05 science gpa , ive literally gotten all B's in my sciences with the exception of 1 b+ in organic chem. Never lower .
Ive volunteered at a community retirement home, and am currently shadowing a dentist. I have an interview for research at a local hospital as well.

Im going to be applying to well over 6 schools but my main ones are NYU, Stony Brook U and Buffalo U.

Someone with great tips / advice?

Overall gpa is decent but your science gpa is pretty low. You'd better apply to way more than 6 schools.... but its hard to say without your DAT score.

3.05 science gpa will make it very hard for you to get into NYU, SBU and Buffalo U. Those schools focus heavily on gpa when it comes to admissions.

Apply to more schools and get more A's in science classes.

Problem is ive finished most of my science courses, and i have nothing left to improve except my total gpa ( i have 2 semesters remaining).

If you can do really well on the DAT, especially the science sections, I'd say that you'd have a pretty good shot.

Find any science course and raise your science gpa... Have you taken basic math courses? Those will count on science gpa... What about pharmacology, cell biology, histology, neurobiology, head and neck anatomy, biochemistry, or plant biology courses? There has got to be something at your school you have not taken. Research professors and make a schedule where you know you can pull some As in the science course.

Honestly, your overall is ok and science is a bit low... If you can raise them to about a 3.5 and 3.2 you will be better off.

HARD TO SAY WITHOUT A DAT SCORE... With ok gpa and lower science gpa your DAT can really make or break the deal... Study hard for it and do well on the science (20+).

Hard to tell where you stand without a DAT. If you get less than 19TS then IMO a retake becomes a must.

Like previous posted suggested, you WILL need to apply to more than 6 schools irrespective of how well you do on the DAT. That sub 3.0 sGPA hurts.

Another thing I'd recommend is to apply to 20 schools.

As far as today goes, the ONLY thing you can do to help your application is to rock that DAT. Its the cheapest and shortest fix as for today....

all the best on the test

Gd bless you all and thats exactly what i thought. I had no clue math counted as science gpa so i will be taking calculus next semester. Thanks all

basic math courses count as science gpa??

Which math courses?

Does algebra and Statistics count as science?

Thanks

Your science GPA is on the low side, as is your overall GPA.

If your OGPA was 3.4 and SGPA was 3.4 I think you would be ok. But since your SGPA is around 3.0, you need to make up for it in other ways, these include but are not limited to:

1. (most important) High DAT 19 or below probably wont cut it. Shoot for a 21.
2. Good Personal Statement and application (you need to look good)
3. (easiest one) Apply early!
4. You should be getting your letters of rec right now, don't delay. You need to take the DAT soon, so your app can go in within a few weeks AADSAS opens.

Good luck

Your Science GPA also gets broken down into Bio/Chem/Physics GPA without math. So if you're planning on loading up with a bunch of geometry and algebra to raise your GPA, they're going to see right through it. Best to take upper level bio.

I'm pretty sure your counselor lied to you or has no idea what he/she is talking about. It's definitely not fine with a 3.05 science GPA. Load up on entire semesters of upper level biology to raise it up. Also make sure you ace them. At this point with so many hours, it might go up very slowly so you want to get lots of A and at least have an upward trend.

B's are bad. If you made all B+ in every science course you took, it's still a 3.0 GPA to AADSAS. Only A's are worth it.

what i meant to basically say is that i go to queens college, and dental schools really admire city colleges, especially Queens. The school is infamous for its difficulty in the pre med prequisites and the average grades in the class are in the low 40 ranges.

i got to queens college, and my counselor says that a C+ in a bio class would amount to like a B+ for other schools. The school is infamous for its difficulty in the pre med prequisites and the average grades in the class are in the low 40 ranges.

Thats not what i meant at all. i was actually just worried because i didnt know that math affected science GPA. so i assume its true? science GPA includes algebra and even statistics?

Don't think so friend.

Queens college in NY?
It isn't even ranked nationally.

Yes the science GPA includes those. But they get taken out in the Bio/chem/physics GPA. So the dental schools will see that as well. If you have terrible math grades, it wouldn't bring down your BCP but it would bring down your overall science.

Get a new counselor ASAP.

i just have to add, MANY people have been giving out advice such as " Get STRAIGHT a's or get a few more A's in your sciences" . The problem with this is that in a city college, the only kids getting the A's are like the sub geniuses..... Its literally impossible to get an A, in ANY of the science classes offered at the college unless like ive mentioned, you were a REALLY brilliant student. I just get so bewildered when so many people say it as if its so easy, which confirms my belief that city colleges are much harder in the pre-medical field.

I know many dumb kids personally ( ones who were just never the type to get good grades in hs) who do really well in their sciences at private schools.

Im not sure how it will go, but i guess i have to try my hardest and see where it takes me. Thank you all for your honest supportive advice.

wanna see a real genius?

I dunno how many geniuses you have in your classroom, but I doubt any of them are challenging Einstein's theory on quantum mechanics.... at age 12

My point is....I don't think your giving yourself enough credit. I believe your 'B'-only issue is in your head. Try adjusting your studying habits, how do you study by the way? Do you keep up with lectures daily? or do you wait for the weekend before the exam to hit the books? These things matter alot. Obviously your not "slow" or stupid (excuse my language), if you were either of those things, you'd be getting alot more Cs and few sprinkle of Ds.

Give yourself more credit, readjust your studying habits, ask people around how they study and hone-in on new methods you've never tried before....

No, trust me im not one of those "few days before the exam" type of guys. I study hours a day months before the exam to prepare my self for any exam. Oh well well see what well see. Thanks anyway

You have to find a way to pull up your science GPA, especially with how competitive it is to get into dental school. If you don't, you are really going to reduce your chances, unless you manage to pull a 22+ overall in the DAT.

Dental schools don't really care where you do your undergrad, because for every person that gets Bs across the board, there's anothr getting As. Unless you are a URM, you need to raise your Sci GPA and apply to 20+ schools, because since you're well into your degree, you GPA will potentially only be in the 3.2-3.3 range with straight As over the next two semesters.

Find some easy upper-division science classes and ace them, take your DAT earlier and nail it, and apply as soon as the application opens.
