Hey,

I've got a question for you all. About two weeks ago, I gave one of my professors the addresses to send my letter of recommendation to. He said that he would send the letter the next week. However, last week, one of his colleagues who was a good friend passed away and I am sure we was pretty broken up about it. Understandablely, I am sure he didn't get to writing the letter. This week I was going to call him and ask how the letter was coming along but I think this might be shallow and tacky. But I really need that letter sent in (he is my only non-science recommender). Any thoughts on how I can pull this off without being a complete douchebag or should I just wait?

I would go with email...that way you can express what you want to say without worrying about slipping if you called him over the phone...also, I'd wait until maybe the end of this week before I'd sent it...I'd start off by expressing condolences and then delicately asking him how your rec was progressing...I'm sure he'd understand.

life is crazy, the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago with my ANTH professor, her best friend passed away 🙁

def try to go the email route, so they can get back to you whenever they feel comfortable, and i'm sure that they will get back to you. if they care to share the info i would just try to express my condolences and maybe (time permitting) suggest they take time to readjust to their new situation - out of respect for them and might result in a better letter

best of luck,
