I am applying to the 2014 cycle. Here is my situation. I have been out of school for a year. I did 149 credits at the university of miami but never got around to taking biochemistry. The only school in my area that has it this summer is Nassau community college. This works for me because I can't afford to spend around 1000 per credit for 4 credits. Would med schools really care if this was the only class I took at a community college?

medical schools don't really care if you take a course at a community college however they prefer students taking it at a university. If you're looking to fulfill a biochemistry prerequisite for medical schools you can take it at your local community college provided that they offer that course.

Not many schools require biochem, first look up specific reqs for schools of interest if you haven't done so already. 🙂

During a couple med school interviews I was asked if resorted to taking any courses at a community college. If its not required by your school I wouldn't do the CC.

Take it if a school you are applying to requires it (Hopkins is the only one that comes to mind). Otherwise save your money because it doesn't matter.

Miami now requires it along with nymc suny upstate Marshall and Ohio state according to msar. All on my list lol. At a cc it'll cost me 300 to take. Might be worth it

Yeah I think that's probably fine but I would check with those schools/look on their website to ensure they don't have a "no CC" clause.

Yeah, worst thing is they require it with a lab as well 🙁

OP, unfortunately for you, because you're applying 2014 and many schools are moving toward accelerated preclinical yrs (which often require a biochem prereq), you are likely to need biochem and the lower division courses offered at a CC will NOT be sufficient. Lower division biochem is the nursing major(esque) course, not the post-ochem course you need. Sorry, you're going to want to start saving up for it. I know, it sucks. Sorry buddy.

so based on the responses to the OP's question.. I have to deal with more ochem type stuff after I just celebrated going to my last ever ochem lecture.. Someone please tell me biochem is nothing like ochem..

It's not at all like ochem but ochem is a prereq. Mechanisms will require a slight amt of ochem knowledge but it's a very different kind of course.

Oh good! 🙂 As long as it's not like o-chem, I'll be fine!

Add OHSU and U of Arizona, Phoenix to the list of schools requiring biochem.
