I notice almost all optometry school require psychology as pre-req. But, I am wondering does it matter what kind of psychology? And will one semester of psychology (3 credits) be sufficient?

btw, I am attending a Canadian university. Hope someone can help me out b4 i register my courses next yr. thanx!

Hello:

The best option is to call the schools you are applying to and ask them specifically if a certain psychology course will meet their prerequisite. Sometimes they will ask you to fax to them the course description in your university?s catalogue or website.

Best wishes,

Rosanna

Well I would say that psychology is relevant , for this reason , you have to understand the human mind and how it works to be able to handle your patients[pxt] because some pxts come to the clinics not really having problems with their vision , and there are times you need to counsel your pxt . But know this , it's not just any type , specifically Introductory , clinical , and childhood psychology . But still ask the school you are applying to .
Take care and I hope this helps. 👍

Just today at the VA I've had two patients being treated for psychiatric conditions... one had dementia after vascular infarcts... the other was borderline schitzophrenic.

They have you take psych since you will be seeing these patients. It's good to have a baseline knowledge of what's walking into your clinic and how it works.

As far as which psych to take: definitely call schools and see what they're looking for.

thanx guys for all the help!

I think I will take introductory to clinical psychology at my school, it should fullfill most optometry school requirement i hope.
