I won't be applying until summer of 2005 but I am just a little confused regarding state residency; as I am sure you all know some schools heavily favor accepting in-state rather then out of state residents, however I am not sure what I exactly fall under.

I am an independent, 20 year old, with a Californian license, voter registration and whole shebang, I've been living in California since I started college here. However I still have to pay out of state resident fee since my parents are Nevadan residents, so I am not sure exactly what state resident that I come under? Can anyone help me clarify?

Thanks

Call the motor vehicle department for California and see if they can answer your question about what it takes to be considered a California resident. Although they may not be able to your question exactly they should be able to give you the name and number of an orginazation/person who can.

Odds are that you will not qualify for residency in CA. Most states use the simple rule of why are you there. You are in CA for educational purposes, therefore are not a resident - if this rule applies to CA.

Yup, CA definitely does the "educational purposes" rule, so I think you'd be considered a resident of NV, unless you stay and work and pay taxes for a year in CA after you graduate.

i had the same problem... i was born and raised in cali and then worked in cali for a couple of years, and the moment i moved out (been working in boston for about a year now), i lost my residency status, cuz according to the state of cali, I moved out of state for a job and doesn't seem temporary (such as job training, education, etc.). I don't have a driver's license in MA, but I do have one in CA. So it's not really all about where u have a driver's license, but rather motive for living in a state. So i THINK i am not a resident of any state. Unless i chalk up $90 to finally get a driver's license in MA and somehow declare that i am a resident here in MA (putting my MA address as permanent residence on work forms and etc.). Still am a little confused. Dang i gotta figure out how i'm gonna vote for the upcoming election.

I know for some schools that your state residency is that of your parents if you are still claimed as a dependent on their tax returns. Talk to your school's med. school and they can clear up any issues for you if it is still unclear.

This "educational purposes" may only apply for undergraduate students. I know that it was VERY easy to get California residency for California law schools and that after one year in a UC, you get Cali residency, as well.

If you want to be a California resident, have your parents quit declaring you as a dependent. My guess is that so long as this is the case, you're a Nevada resident until you're 24.

As an aside, it would be much easier to get into Nevada's med school than a UC.
