I'm finishing my masters at a medical school on their DO campus. And I'm taking Gross Anatomy with the DO students so I get to interact with them quite a bit. Whenever they find out I'm going to dental school next year, they start asking me about the DDS/DMD and what not. And what pisses me off more than anything in the world is when they ask,

So are DDS and DMD like the same thing as DO and MD?

NO YOU IDIOTS! I can't stand DO's who get off on thinking they're on the same level of an MD. DDS and DMD are equivalent degrees and neither is at any sort of disadvantage when applying for job/residency. HOWEVER, you are at a disadvantage if you are a DO. I'm simply venting right now, but I hate when DO's get off thinking they're from Harvard Med grads when they weren't even good enough to get into an MD school. Have you ever heard/seen a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has a DO, good chance you haven't because they can't get in! I rememeber I asked one girl in response to her question, have you ever heard of someone pick an MD school over a DO school? No, because you're committing career suicide. I'll never take my future children to DO's just because I know how much BS they are. OMM?!?! Come on, give me a break, you have to take a whole class on how to crack my back and neck? Congratulations!

FYI: My orthopedic surgeon is a DO who completed an MD residency and took the spots of some "better" MD grad who has an "MD complex" that all MDs are better than DOs. Which means he had to pass/receive high scores on both the STEP and COMLEX to obtain an MD residency. He then went on to complete a fellowship in hand surgery at a highly regarded program. And he also received the highest score in the country on the orthopedic surgeon licensing exam the year he took it.

Most osteopathic physicians don't even use osteopathic manipulative medicine today. It is typically a practice that family doctors in rural medicine employ with their patients. Aside from OMM, the extent of MD and DO training are essentially the same. Just because you are a DO does not mean you cannot become a surgeon. Granted, many DOs are family practice, peds, or ob/gyn. But then again, a large percentage of MDs are also family practice, peds, ob/gyn.

my point exactly, he had to work probably harder than the average MD student to get to where he is. Bottom line, you're at a disadvantage being a DO. Not to say you can't be as successful as an MD, if not more successful, you just have to prove yourself a lot more. My problem is with DO students who think right off the bat in their first year they're going to be the next world reknowned cardiothoracic surgeon. I encounter many of these a-holes on a regular basis. DO's should know their place...

what are you so mad about again?????

when seeking a doc for me or my family i look at the individual, not whether DO/MD. historically DO's practiced in underserved, primary care settings. that's not to say they can't practice derm or plastics if that's their cup of tea and they can get into the residency - and i'm sure there are some very successful and skilled ones out there.

the DOs i i know don't do the OMM thing.

DO's should know their place...

As though they are the red headed stepchild in the corner right? Every DO I've gone to has been far superior to most of the MD's I've had. My dad, an MD, thought many of his DO colleges were much better clinicians than many of the other MD's. Lastly, my dermatologist is a DO.

My dermatologist is a DO, and one of the pathologists I work for is a DO. She's pulling in over 200K right out of residency, so I doubt she's at a "disadvantage".

If you go into the DO forums... 90 percent of them said they could have gotten into MD schools, but chose DO over MD. They can't admit that they had to settle for DO. That is what annoys me personally.
