For the sake of argument, say I am accepted this year. How will the schools look at grades from this year? At all? What about wait listed?

If you're accepted then grades don't really matter unless you fail a course or get a low grade. Even if that happens you will probably have a chance to explain why! If waitlisted bad grades can hurt you because you really can't update your file with you new grades. Schools like to see that you are doing well and like to be kept informed on activities during the app process. That's my 2 cents.:)
