I am going to be applying to podiatry schools in september (all of them) my question is regarding residences afterward (yes I know getting in and getting through come first) but Im curious as to how students are granted residencies. are they given according to GPA, eduaction..etc are they really competetive to obtain ???? Thanx

It's really no different than the MD/DO residency match and scramble. Yes there are some residencies that are more competitive to get (usually considered the better residencies) and their are some that are less competitive to get. Prospective residency programs weigh everything from GPA and research to academic and social interviews.

thanx for the reply, what constitues a more competetive residency versus a less competetive residency?

Okay, so what is that residency match thing for? Do students apply to residency programs individually or through the match program? I don't understand the residency thing at all...

You might also want to know that there is a projected residency shortage for students graduating in 2010 and beyond. Although it is being addressed and supposedly dealt with, you should keep in mind that getting a residency will be more competitive in the next several years.

It's a match program. You can look at more specifics at aacpm.org. But, basically you rank your top programs and the programs rank their top people...it reminds me a lot of rushing a sorority in undergrad. Usually you try to do a clerkship or visitation at a program that interests you, so that the program knows you well enough to want you for residency. And obviously GPA and class rank factor in to their decision making process when ranking students. There are three centralized locations for residency interviewing that is held in Dec of fourth year. Then you find out where you matched in March. That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
