Hey everyone,

A couple of quick questions about the match. I found an interesting document on Scutwork that lists unfilled programs by institution. The Institution I am interested in (because of geographical concerns) had MANY open spots in 2005. I mean all of their programs except EM, Plastics and Derm had open spots, sometimes multiple.

Can I assume then that when it comes time for me to apply to this institution for a Residency spot that it will be easy for me to match? Even if I end up being a mediocre student class-rank wise, or if I score poorly on the boards (worse case scenario!)?

I know I've got some time, but I need to plan out my life, know what city I'll be living in in a few years, think about buying a house, work arrangements for my hubby, etc.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

See the scutwork list by year, alot of programs are filled one year and the next they have some spaces available. So it depends on the year and the quantity of applicants etc etc

Be careful about that listing though. Sometimes it doesn't truly reflect an unmatched position. For instance, Program X normally takes 20 residents per year, but for some reason they are only taking 15 next year. The program will list them as matching 15 out of 20 positions.

My program is reducing the total number of match positions by 2 next year because we have 2 residents that are extending their residency for research purposes. So next year, our program will be reported as matching only 8 of 10 positions, even though we filled all that we wanted or were allowed to fill by RRC guidelines. (Because of the resident extensions, we cannot "add" to the program total.)
