Hey Guys:

I have a few questions about NYU and I was hoping if there are any D3 or D4 students of NYUCD here that could answer them. I've interviewed at NYUCD about a month ago and it was an amazing experience. I've come to realize that many rumors are untrue about the school. So no, I'm not going to ask you if NYU has high drop out rate lol. Here are my questions:

1. I've learned that NYUCD students need to sign up for chairs. Did you guys have trouble getting a chair when you have a patient?

2. Did you have trouble getting patients?

3. I've heard that dentists don't like to hire NYUCD graduates as associates. Is this true? or is it just rumor again?

4. I guess the bottom line is, do you feel clinical competent after graduating?

I just want to learn more about the school and don't want false rumors to affect my decision of dental school. NYC is irresistable 😛

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

you know what im talking about. how alot of people tell you not to go to this school and keep it as your very last option. even a relative of mine who's an endodontist told me to re-apply in 08 if i dont get in anywhere but nyu. but lately everything ive been reading about this school is real real positive. good comments on the interview feedback thing, and a little research shows how much work and money theyre putting into their facilities. does anyone have any specific knowledge about this school and its future?

I graduated from NYUCD and am now doing perio residency. There are always good things and bad things about every school. Bottom line is dental school is hard and require a lot of effort.
To answer your question
1. We had to sign up for chair, but I never had a problem finding chair when I wanted to see patients. There must be over 300 chair in that school.
2. I think the advantage of going to NYUCD over other school is its patient pool. Due to its location, it has enough patients even though it has over 300 student per class. And these patients have relatively higher income to pay for the procedure compared to other school located in rural area. This will allow you to do a lot more procedure other than filling and denture.
3. I never heard of that anyone would not hire NYUCD graduate. I am doing residency in another dental school. From what I saw at least, NYUCD grad are more prepared to enter practice than grads from other schools in this area clinically.

In my humble opinion, NYUCD will prepare you very well clinically and ready for the real world right out of school if you want to do GP. What it lack is its basic science program. It doesn't really encourage you or prepare you much if your goal is to specialize. Students there score lower in national board which is a important factor when you apply for post-doc program. Also students there arent really participate in research which is another important factor if you want to specialize. NYUCD has about the same number of grads who enter post-grad program as its neighboring school, Columbia, while its student body is 4 times as large than Columbia.

So it is really up to you to decide if this is a school for you. NYU is a very clinical school if that is what you are looking for.
There is a saying among dentists in new york area.
NYU grad can do everything right out of school, but they dont know anything.
Columbia grad know everything, but they cant do anything.

But if you are motivated enough, you will get what you put in regardless which school you go to.
